Author Review: Sweet Revenge by Vivi Dumas

Sweet Revenge by Vivi Dumas
Publisher: Self Published
Genre: Erotic Paranormal Romance
Length: 199 pages

Summary:

Finalist in the Music City Melody of Love Contest Hell hath no fury like a woman scorn. What if that woman is a demon, in fact Lilith’s very own daughter? Isabella LaCoste vowed to get her revenge on her ex and his new human fiance. She didn’t commit fifty years of her life to be thrown out like last season’s runway fad. But taking vengeance on an upper level Shifter Demon and the newly crowned Voodoo Princess might not be a one demon job. She volunteers her services to Lucifer to deliver Angel and Jacque in exchange for his help. She never expected her new partner in crime would fill the void in her broken heart. Not even death brought him peace.

Xavier Toussant wanted out of his contract and the killing business. His last assignment was his own brother and he failed to deliver. Lucifer didn’t appreciate his valor in dealing with his brother, Jacque. In fact, it only created more problems. Xavier’s back on assignment to capture his brother and the Voodoo chick. Only this time, he’s shackled to the craziest female in the Underworld. Xavier finds Isabella LaCoste might be the one thing to put his soul at ease.

Naunet’s Review:

The sweetest revenge is served by a determined, contemptuous woman; even better plated up when cold. Sweet Revenge by endowed author, Vivi Dumas, is the icing on the cake in my opinion. Ms. Dumas satisfies the appetite of her audience by creating a sequel that flows seamlessly with dynamic characters, an intriguing setting, a highly erotic romance and a flawless storyline. The book Sweet Revenge is an arsenal of paranormal action, romance and suspense.

The women in Sweet Revenge are anything but genteel. Isabella LaCoste and Angel Dias are spicy, energetic and kick-butt women who are fearless in the face of the devil himself when it comes to protecting loved ones.

Vivi Dumas brings the heat to the confrontational issues between good and evil, social, cultural and racial components, as well as human and non-human personas. The vibration throughout Sweet Revenge reminds me of the thunderous beat of a marching band competition between the top two contenders. Ms. Dumas manufactures settings and characters that require unrestricted, free-spirited energy of a writer with conviction and plenty of soul to captivate the minds of readers; thereby, transporting them outside of themselves and their world. I appreciate such finely developed skills and devoured Sweet Revenge like a starving woman coming off of a six month chocolate fast. :-) The settings were realistically illustrated from New Orleans and beyond to the bowels of Hell.

Isabella LaCoste, Angel Dias, Jacque Toussant, Xavier Toussant, and Lucifer are the main characters in Vivi Dumas’ romance, Soul Catcher, and she intensifies all aspects of their personalities, relationships and their missions which entwine like that of a grapevine in Sweet Revenge. The connections between these characters carries the intoxicating effect of an aphrodisiac within the Sweet Revenge that’s rich with potent, spicy dialogue. Ms. Dumas submerges her readers senses by utilizing irresistibly handsome, sexy characters with power, awesome erotic encounters and romance that makes carrying them along on a carnal interlude hotter than hell. :-)

I believe the message Ms. Dumas conveys is the importance of devotion, honor and commitment in the face of opposition. A common cause is capable of uniting individuals who stand on opposite sides together in battle for the greater good to defeat evil.

I thoroughly enjoyed Sweet Revenge and have recommended Ms. Dumas to friends as an author whose star is reaching beyond the earthly realm into the stratosphere where only vivid imaginations can dwell.

Sweet Revenge is truly a five star read and from a reader who never considered being so enthralled with the vamps, demons and other dark beings as I have been with this narrative and Soul Catcher. I must thank Ms. Dumas for sharing her boldness and gifted writing to baptize me into another world capable of providing me with an unusual place to escape daily stressors and relax in the excitement and sensuality of her characters’ world.

Author Review: Reilly’s Wildcard by Anne Rainey

Reilly’s Wildcard by Anne Rainey
Series: Blackwater, Book Four
Publisher: Samhain Publishing
Genre: Contemporary, Erotic Romance
Length: 130 pages

Amazon Kindle   Barnes and Noble Nook

Summary:

The most potent lover she’s ever had…and the morning sickness to prove it!

Blackwater, Book 4

Lucy Rice knew that a night of uninhibited passion with sex-on-a-stick Reilly Jennings would leave a lasting impression on her body. But never in a million years did she expect to see a plus sign appear on that little white stick.

Pregnant? She can’t believe her eyes. When a second test confirms it, Lucy admits the truth. She’s about to be a one-night-stand mommy. How’s that for luck?

Reilly never wanted the responsibility of fatherhood, much less tie himself to an infuriating, headstrong woman like Lucy. Still, his sense of honor won’t let him abandon his baby like his biological parents abandoned him. Yet it isn’t long before he’s captivated by the coming baby—and the mother carrying it.

Lucy is rocked with all sorts of conflicting feelings for the father of her child. Unfortunately, she’s been down that road before, and it left her a blubbering mess. Not again. No way, no how. Except Reilly seems hell-bent on keeping her close. Maybe it’s the hormones, but Lucy’s beginning to forget why that’s a bad idea…

Product Warnings

This title contains a tender and romantic man bent on proving he can be more than a good time, and a woman in serious need of the love of an honorable man.

AJ’s Review:

ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT! Just when I think Anne Rainey’s Blackwater series couldn’t get any better, she proves me wrong by penning another riveting installment that had me enthralled from page one. Reilly’s Wildcard is sexy, sensual and full of raw, uninhibited passion that would make any girl’s body tingle and toes curl.

After reading Reilly’s Wildcard, I want a Reilly of my own. Ms Rainey has developed a sexy alpha with a soft, caring side and an insatiable appetite for the woman who has stolen his heart and soul. Every single page was simply delicious as Reilly and Lucy embraced their future and relinquished their fears in order to love one another deeply and unconditionally.

Lucy is sexy, fierce when it comes to protecting the people she loves, and vulnerable as a result of her ex-husband who was a lying, cheating ass-hat, and her daddy who’s a mean drunk. My heart simply broke for both Lucy and Reilly, but I was also proud of them and for them considering everything they had managed to overcome. Their blossoming relationship is full of drama, angst, and hot make-up sex. What more could a girl ask for?

The secondary characters continue to help bring this story and series to life with their witty, intense, and at times humorous banter. You can’t help but feel a little overwhelmed by the Jennings family, but you also feel loved. It obvious that this dynamic family deeply cares for one another and will do anything to see the members in their family happy. The characters were well-developed and three dimensional as Ms. Rainey takes us on the ride of a lifetime with Reilly and Lucy’s world-wind romance.

Reilly’s Wildcard is the perfect mix of warm, caring, everlasting love and unbridled passion that would make any woman swoon. The sex scenes are delicious, the drama and fears of our hero and heroine are palpable and realistic, and the drama simply leaps off the page; thereby, quickly drawing the reader into the magnificent world of Anne Rainey’s Blackwater series. Shoot, it was so good that I read it in one sitting. :) I simply couldn’t get enough and am dying to know what happens next between River and Jeanette. :) If you haven’t picked up a copy of Reilly’s Wildcard then what are you waiting on because Ms. Rainey’s latest installment in the Blackwater series is guaranteed to knock your socks off and maybe even allow your significant other to get lucky after you’ve finished reading the book. :) Just saying!

Author Review: Sweet Peril by Wendy Higgins

Sweet Peril by Wendy Higgins
Series: Sweet Trilogy, Book 2
Imprint: HarperTeen
Publisher: HarperCollins Publishing
Genre: Young Adult, Paranormal Romance
Length: 389 pages

Amazon Kindle   Barnes and Noble Nook

Summary:

Anna Whitt, daughter of a guardian angel and a demon, promised herself she’d never do the work of her father–polluting souls. She’d been naive to make such a claim. She’d been naive about a lot of things.

Haunted by demon whisperers, Anna does whatever she can to survive, even if it means embracing her dark side and earning an unwanted reputation as her school’s party girl. Her life has never looked more bleak. And all the while there’s Kaidan Rowe, son of the Duke of Lust, plaguing her heart and mind.

When an unexpected lost message from the angels surfaces, Anna finds herself traveling the globe with Kopano, son of Wrath, in an attempt to gain support of fellow Nephilim and give them hope for the first time. It soon becomes clear that whatever freedoms Anna and the rest of the Neph are hoping to win will not be gained without a fight. Until then, Anna and Kaidan must put aside the issues between them, overcome the steamiest of temptations yet, and face the ultimate question: is loving someone worth risking their life?

AJ’s Review:

FREAKIN-FAN-TASTIC! I’m totally hooked on Wendy Higgins’ Sweet Trilogy series. In Sweet Peril, Ms. Higgins amps up the danger, the wickedness, the lust, and the love.

Anna has grown into her character so much that you can’t help but admire this strong, young woman who has been given a dangerous task. Ms. Higgins has done a superb job of transforming Anna from the naive, shy girl that we saw in Sweet Evil, to the head-strong, love-sick teenager who is ready to take on the Dukes and claim her man once and for all. While the sexual tension between Anna and Kopano still sizzles, her heart and soul truly belongs to Kaidan. How will this smart, sexy, sassy young lady convince Kaidan not only that he deserves her love, but also that they’re stronger together than apart?

Kaidan is still sexy, fierce when it comes to protecting Anna, swoon-worthy, and lovesick, whether he wants to admit it or not. Fed up with the Dukes and his job, he decides to rebel. But will his rebellion put Anna and himself in danger? Will he shake the lovesick blues or finally give in to his hearts desire? Guess you’ll have to read the book to find out.

The secondary characters in this tantalizing story are simply amazing. Not only do they increase the depth and complexity of the story, but they also add to the sexual tension, the teen drama, and the danger. I’m dying to know how this will all workout and can’t wait for the third book in this magnificent trilogy. The dialogue remains fresh and crisp, the banter and sarcasm witty, the danger and fear palpable, and the love endearing. You couldn’t ask for a better cast of characters. I also loved how Ms. Higgins allowed the story to play-out in regards to Anna and Kaidan’s relationship because it increased the believability of the story.  I also loved how she introduced background information about one of the Nephs in the prologue and eventually brought it full circle in the story to show its significance.

Wendy Higgins has crafted a steamy, intense, entertaining  sequel that’s dark, edgy, at times humorous, sensual, exhilarating and full of life and love with swoon worthy characters. The plot is so riveting and packed full of action that it’s guaranteed to take your breath away and keep you on the edge of your seat until the last page is read. Ultimately, you will be begging for more because I know that I am. In fact, I can’t wait to see what Ms. Higgins has in store for Kopano and Z. :)   Therefore, pick up a copy of the first two books in Wendy Higgins Sweet Trilogy series, Sweet Evil and Sweet Peril, and embrace the dark, sexy side of Anna, Kaidan, Kopano and the rest of the Nephilim. :) You won’t be sorry!

Grace

AJ’s Review:

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! Once again Ms. Kitt has penned a compelling story that pulls at your heartstrings as the characters we have grown to love in the Under Mr. Nolan’s Bed series unveil a myriad of lies and secrets that could destroy them or set them free once and for all. Grace was the perfect finale to this long awaited trilogy and I for one am in awe of Ms. Kitt’s writing skills because with each installment not only does she bring each character to life, but the reader also becomes so fully immersed in their trials and tribulations that you can’t help but feel all of the raw emotions running through each character.

Leah, Eric and Mr. Nolan are definitely some of my favorite characters. Their unconditional love for one another during times of upheaval that ranged from sexual deviance to segregation to the hypocrisy of the Catholic Church kept me enthralled in this riveting read until the very end. In fact, I read it in one sitting because I simply couldn’t get enough. I had to know if Leah and Rob (a.k.a. Mr. Nolan) would ever find Grace and be able to start their Happily Ever After. While the sexual chemistry is still like a blazing inferno between Leah and Mr. Nolan, it’s their love for one another through the difficult times that shines through and warms the reader’s heart. There was nothing that Mr. Nolan wouldn’t do to make sure that Leah and Erica were both happy, which was very admirable. Moreover, I’ve always found Mr. Nolan sexy and these wonderful characteristics only made him more appealing to me.

Erica is a force to be reckoned with in that she’s stronger than she gives herself credit for. This young woman has experienced a lot of the darker side of life at such a young age, but with each installment she thrives and eventually finds her way in Grace, which made me happy to no end because like Leah, Erica deserved a Happily Ever After.

While Patty, Leah’s mom, is still not one of my favorite characters, after reading Grace, I have a better understanding of everything she has experienced in life. In fact, there was a point in the book that she redeemed herself somewhat in my eyes, which is a testament to Selena Kitt’s imagination and writing skills. While I can’t forget what she did to Leah, I can forgive to an extent. :) As for the villains in this mesmerizing story, I couldn’t wait to see them get exactly what they deserved, especially Father Patrick and the Ghoul. But be forewarned, Grace is not for the faint at heart to an extent. Some of the secrets and lies that are unveiled will make your head spin as Ms. Kitt incorporates a few twists and turns in the plot that will make you say WTH????? My only niggle with the book was that there were a few minor editing problems, but nothing that would deter you from the story by any means.

If you’re looking for a fabulous story with vulnerable, lovable, yet flawed characters who will warm your heart and soul to the core, a compelling plot with enough twist and turns to leave your mouth hanging open in shock, unbridled passion that will make the strongest of men and women swoon, and endearing, unconditional love that will put a smile on your face and a tear in your eye, then Grace by Selena Kitt is definitely the book to read. In fact, pickup the entire Under Mr. Nolan’s Bed series today for a heart-stopping, chest pounding read that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end. Bravo Selena Kitt as you’ve hit a home run not only with Grace, but also the entire Under Mr. Nolan’s Bed series and I’ll definitely be recommending it to my friends. :)

Author Review: Dream Lake by Lisa Kleypas

Dream Lake by Lisa Kleypas
Series: Friday Harbor, Book 3
Publisher: St. Martin’s Press
Genre: Contemporary Romance, Spicy
Length: 385 pages

Amazon Kindle Barnes and Noble Nook

Summary:

They say that opposites attract. But what happens when one of them has been devastated by betrayal and the other is so damaged and jaded that his heart is made of stone? In New York Times bestselling author Lisa Kleypas’s Dream Lake, readers well enter the world of Friday Harbor, an enchanting town in the Pacific Northwest where things are not quite as they seem and where true love might just have a ghost of a chance. . . .

Alex Nolan is about as bitter and cynical as they come. One of three Nolan brothers who call Friday Harbor home, he’s nothing like Sam or Mark. They actually believe in love; they think the risk of pain is worth the chance of happiness. But Alex battles his demons with the help of a whiskey bottle, and he lives in his own private hell. And then, a ghost shows up. Only Alex can see him. Has Alex finally crossed over the threshold to insanity?

Zoë Hoffman is as gentle and romantic as they come. When she meets the startlingly gorgeous Alex Nolan, all her instincts tell her to run. Even Alex tells her to run. But something in him calls to Zoë, and she forces him to take a look at his life with a clear eye and to open his mind to the possibility that love isn’t for the foolish.

The ghost has been existing in the half-light of this world for decades. He doesn’t know who he is, or why he is stuck in the Nolans’ Victorian house. All he knows is that he loved a girl once. And Alex and Zoë hold the key to unlocking a mystery that keeps him trapped here.

Zoë and Alex are oil and water, fire and ice, sunshine and shadow. But sometimes it takes only a glimmer of light to chase away the dark, and sometimes love can reach beyond time, space, and reason to take hold of hearts that yearn for it. . . .

AJ’s Review:

From the moment Alex Nolan was introduced in Christmas Eve at Friday Harbor, I knew that his story was going to rock my world. Ms. Kleypas addresses the difficult issues of substance abuse, long-lost loves, nasty divorces, unwanted children, loss, forgiveness, redemption, and death with finesse and class. Dream Lake took this reader through a myriad of emotions that ranged from sadness, to anger, to hope, and ultimately to love. With the help of an unusual ghost and a little magic, Dream Lake entices the reader with its complex plot, beautiful scenery, realistic dialogue, charismatic characters, and poignant messages about life and unconditional love. I simply couldn’t get enough of this riveting story that I finished reading in one sitting.

Zoe is kind-hearted, smart, sexy, an optimist and romantic at heart, as well as a whiz in the kitchen. Everything she cooked was a masterpiece and made my mouth water. But it was her non-judgemental attitude toward Alex that made this character come to life for me. The old trope – opposites attract – has never been truer when it comes to Zoe and Alex, but that’s what makes their story so magical. I loved how they struggled at times to communicate with one another, yet at other times, it was as though they were two halves of a whole who completed one another.

Alex is intelligent, hardworking, brooding, and sexy, but most of all he’s vulnerable and on the edge of losing himself forever to the machinations of alcohol. No one has every loved him unconditionally, which is the reason he made a point early on in life not to get attached to people. That is until he meets Zoe, who manages to turn his world upside down. Well, Zoe and Tom, his friendly neighborhood ghost. :) Lisa Kleypas’ ability to incorporate the past with present in such an imaginative and creative way is a testament to her writing skills. Not only did Tom increase the depth of the story, but he also strengthened Alex’s character as he relived the past and tried to learn from his mistakes.

The secondary characters, Emma and Justine, increased the richness of Dream Lake. My heart went out to Zoe and Emma as the rolls reversed and Zoe became the caregiver. Being a caregiver myself, I know how that affects a person both emotionally and physically. It was obvious that Ms. Kleypas had done her homework in regards to dementia and the options that were available to families who were experiencing such a dramatic change in their lives. Not only was the storyline believable, but it also increased the genuineness of the characters. The setting remains picturesque as Ms. Kleypas continues to introduce the reader to the quaint town of Friday Harbor. Once again, the interaction between the Nolan brothers, specifically Alex and Sam, was full of witty banter and at times underlining meanings that eventually reveal themselves and gives the reader an ah-ha moment.

If you’re looking for an unforgettable, emotionally charged story that encompasses genuine, yet flawed characters, rich dialogue, poignant messages regarding life and love, and a tantalizing plot that incorporates a touch of magic to warm your heart and heal your soul while putting a smile on your face, then Dream Lake by Lisa Kleypas is definitely the book to read. I’ve enjoyed every book in the Friday Harbor series and can’t wait to see what Ms. Kleypas has in store for Justine. :)

With the authorities looking to make an example of Angelo, Gabe has to decide if it’s really worth it to hate the sin but love the sinner.

Reader Advisory: This book contains brief scenes of gang-related violence.

A Romantica® erotic romance from Ellora’s Cave

AJ’s Review:

Love the Sinner, Avril Ashton’s first book in the Brooklyn Sinners series, is fast-paced, action packed, sexy, emotional, and full of raw, uninhibited sex. If the bullets don’t get you, then the smoking hot love scenes will.

Detective Gabriel Ashby is in a rut, especially in his personal life. However, when he meets Angelo Pagan, the leader of Los Pescadores, sparks fly as the two men go head to head to solve Angelo’s sister’s murder. While the witty, sensual banter that’s volleyed back and forth between Gabriel and Angelo is intriguing, it’s the undying need, professional suicide, and denial that makes this couples’ love for one another so explosive.

Angelo Pagan is highly intelligent, ruthless, dangerous, and deadly when it comes to protecting the people that he loves. Not only is he seeking revenge for his sister and father’s murder, but also for the attempted murder of Gabe, the man his heart and body desires. I always enjoy the forbidden love/bad boy trope and Ms. Ashton takes it to a whole new level with her riveting characters that make you want to root for the bad guy. But in spite of their undying love for one another, it’s forbidden and risky. Will Gabe and Angelo find a way to destroy their enemy in order to pursue their Happily Ever After?

The secondary characters in Love the Sinner are well-developed and give this story a full-bodied feeling similar to the finest of wines. The suspense and mind games that occur throughout the book are realistic and play out like an SVU episode. It’s obvious that Ms. Ashton did her homework in regards to the culture of gangs, as the dialogue was rich, buoyant, and believable. The characters are three-dimensional and flawed, yet lovable. You can’t help but instantly like Angelo who is supposedly the bad guy. As the story unfolds and the reader learns more about out two heroes, it’s obvious that they are desperately in love. I immediately fell in love with Angelo’s mother who not only understood and loved her son unconditionally, but was someone with whom he could confide in. They had a special relationship that made my heart swell with joy. In addition, the push and pull play between Gabe and his brother gave me a few “aw” moments as these two gruff men bared their feelings and showed how much they cared for one another. However, I must admit that Ms. Ashton has left me with more questions than answers in regards to the series. For example, what’s going to happen with Pablo? Moreover, how will Mr. S’s endgame play out in the grand scheme of things and when will his story be ready?

Avril Ashton has penned a compelling story with heart and soul that will keep you on the edge of your seat, biting your nails until the very end. The plot is well-crafted and immediately draws the reader into the crux of the story. The love between Gabe and Angelo is intense, emotional, raw, genuine, and at times, simply beautiful. The danger is palpable as our heroes try to determine who is friend and who is foe. And last, but not by any means least, the sex is explosive and will melt your e-reader to smitherines. I couldn’t get enough of this tantlizing story and ended up reading it in one sitting. Therefore, if you haven’t checked out Love the Sinner by Avril Ashton, then you are definitely missing out because this fantastic writer will take you on the emotional roller coaster ride of a life time and then some with her magnificient characters, riveting plot, and no-holds barred love scenes.

Grace learns what it means to be desired, pursued, and protected by three gorgeous men, finding that they will do anything to please her along the way.

Can they prove to Grace they want forever and not just a fling? Can Grace heed the advice of her sister and seize the day?

Note: This is an epic-length novel at 200,000 words.

Lace’s Review:

Heather Rainier’s Divine Grace is a heart stopping menage that has so much more going for it then the hot monkey sex scenes.

Meet Jack, a contractor by trade and a cowboy by heart. He is one sweet love that had my heart melting. His bedside manner is awesome and his kisses are hot.

Meet Ethan, the owner of the Dancing Pony/Dominate. It totally blew me away that even though his character is labeled a “Dom”, we did not get to see that part of this character much, it was mostly is words.

Meet Adam, a contractor and cowboy with the tendency to be a big ole teddy bear. Bigger than Jack or Ethan, this gentle giant grabbed my attention more than the others. His gentleness, along with his true nature is a good buffer between all of them.

Meet the princess of the ball Grace, who is one amazing heroine, and boy does this lady know how to clean house. LOL! I adore her shyness and her ability to accept what she wanted from her men.

Ms. Rainier, I will admit that there is a downer part to this amazing book for me and that’s because I felt there needed to be more “Jack & Grace” moments. He is so giving. The big question is will this quartet be accepted, or will they be shunned by their own town people? Come and visit Divine Grace to find out.

The secondary characters only added sparkle to this already sinfully delicious read. Lord, I was scrambling to keep up with all the things going on. Add an amazing plot line, include hot sex, stellar characters, biaches with guns and an ex who has no clue at all and you have the makings of one amazing read in Divine Grace. Ms. Rainier Rocked!

Author Review: Edge of the Past by Jennifer Comeaux

Edge of the Past by Jennifer Comeaux
Series: Edge Series, Book 2
Publisher: Astraea Press
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Length: 259 pages

Amazon Kindle Barnes and Noble Nook

Summary:

Emily’s skating career and personal life have never been more golden. She and her partner Chris have won every competition they’ve entered this season, and she’s found the man of her dreams in her coach Sergei. But when one of the biggest competitions of the year takes Emily and Sergei to Russia, Sergei’s past explodes into the present and makes Emily doubt everything in their future.

AJ’s Review:

I absolutely adore Emily and Sergei and was so excited when I discovered that there was a second book to their amazing love story. As with Life on the Edge, Emily and Sergei have some growing pains that they must overcome. Once again, Jennifer Comeaux has penned a compelling story with depth, engaging, lifelike characters, and a sensual passion that will warm your heart to the core. The dialogue continues to be crisp and refreshing, and the actions of our hero and heroine remain believable as they navigate their way through life and professional ice skating.

The transition from Life on the Edge to Edge of the Past was seamless as we rejoin Emily and Sergei during a critical time of their life. Chris and Emily are taking the professional skating world by storm and their career truly begins to blossom. But as the wedding draws closer, as well as Emily, Chris and Sergei’s plight for an Olympic Gold Medal, things begin to go haywire as this dynamic trio attempt to win another competition in Russia. As if this wasn’t enough, when Sergei and Emily come face to face with Elena, his long lost love, former skating partner and the mother of his child, things begin to fall apart.

Ms. Comeaux does an excellent job of allowing the reading to experience the trials, tribulations, and emotional turmoil that envelope Emily and Sergei as their life is turned upside down. Not only is their love tested for one another, but also the level of trust that has been built over the years. There were times that I simply wanted to pummel Sergei as he abandoned Emily during her time of need. Yet, there were times that I also wanted to give him a hug because he was truly stuck between a rock and hard place. The poor guy couldn’t win no matter what he did when it came to Emily, Elena, and his future.

Once again, the secondary characters increase the complexity of the story as they leap off the pages and bring the book to life. I loved Chris and was so proud of how he always stood by Emily and helped calm her nerves, even when things were going to h*** in a hand-basket. Emily’s parents were somewhat more mellow in this installment, but I must admit that her mother was hilarious as she tried to speak Russian. While Sergei’s mom was an absolute doll, his father was a source of contention. The man was so broody that it seemed as though Emily and Sergei could do nothing right in his eyes.

Jennifer Comeaux has crafted an entertaining story that continues to draw the reader into the exciting world of professional ice skating. The emotional turmoil and joy between Emily and Sergei was so addictive that I read Edge of the Past in one sitting. I loved how the themes of marriage, family and friends, trust, and ultimately love continue to flow through Edge of the Past. If you haven’t picked up Ms. Comeaux’s Edge series, then you are definitely missing out because she has penned one fantastic, emotional, inspirational journey that everyone should experience for themselves.

Summary:

Embrace the Forbidden

What if there were teens whose lives literally depended on being bad influences?

This is the reality for sons and daughters of fallen angels.

Tenderhearted Southern girl Anna Whitt was born with the sixth sense to see and feel emotions of other people. She’s aware of a struggle within herself, an inexplicable pull toward danger, but Anna, the ultimate good girl, has always had the advantage of her angel side to balance the darkness within. It isn’t until she turns sixteen and meets the alluring Kaidan Rowe that she discovers her terrifying heritage and her willpower is put to the test. He’s the boy your daddy warned you about. If only someone had warned Anna.

Forced to face her destiny, will Anna embrace her halo or her horns?

AJ’s Review:

SEDUCTIVE and WICKED are the two words that come to mind after reading Sweet Evil by Wendy Higgins. Although Ms. Higgins is a new author to me, she quickly enveloped me in her battle of good versus evil and I loved every sinful moment. The characters are a contradiction of naive and experienced in regards to the dark side of the world we live in every day. The good versus evil trope is always a favorite of mine, probably because I love to root for the underdog, and believe me when I say that Anna, Kaidan and the rest of the gang are underdogs when compared to their fathers, The Dukes.

In the grand scheme of things, Anna Whitt falls on the naive side. She’s just discovered that she’s a Nephilim, but not just any old Nephilim. Anna is special because instead of being part human, part demon; she’s part angel, part demon, which definitely makes things interesting. Anna has been sheltered from her past and the ugliness of the real world since birth, but when she meets Kaidan and embraces the powerful attraction they have for one another, her past is slowly unveiled and begins to invade Anna’s present and possible future. I loved that Ms. Higgins increased the characterization of Anna by allowing her to meet her father and form a relationship. The bond that these two develop is simply heartwarming.

Kaidan would definitely fall on the experienced side. He’s the son of lust and knows how to turn on the charm. Add to that his bad boy sexiness and powerful presence and you have one drool-worthy hottie that all of the women faun over. But in all honesty, Kaidan has eyes for only Anna, which is problematic since Nephilim are forbidden to interact romantically. So, the most prominent question that hovers in mind my is whether or not Anna and Kaidan will be able to defy the odds and survive the Dukes in order to have their Happily Ever After?

The secondary characters were absolutely amazing. I loved their quick wit, hearty banter, sarcastic comments, and fierce attitudes when it came to who they were and what they were placed on this Earth to do. While they all have different powers, the one thing they have in common is that they aren’t happy taking orders from the Dukes, yet they’re terrified to go up against their fathers. The dialogue is crisp, the emotions are off the charts, and the sensual chemistry between Anna and Kaidan is intense. But one of the things that makes Sweet Evil so enjoyable, yet unpredictable, is just when you think that you have everything figured out, Ms. Higgins incorporates a few more twists and turns that puts our heroine in a love a triangle. Moreover, as Anna develops a bond with her father, you can’t help but like the Duke. I couldn’t help wondering if later on down the line, Patty, Anna’s stepmom, might end up with Anna’s father. :) The only other relationship that was just as fascinating was that of Anna and her best friends. It was obvious that they cared deeply for one another.

Wendy Higgins has penned a riveting story that will leave you with conflicted emotions on more than one occasion. Moreover, Ms. Higgins ability to seamlessly combine religious myths that hold powerful messages with the present day culture and teenage drama makes for a tantalizing read, which is a testament to her writing ability. The characters are complex, well-developed and three dimensional. The plot and world building is fascinating and will leave the reader with more questions than answers. The suspense in regards to what will happen next has enough angst to keep the reader on the edge of their seat until the every end. In fact, I was sad for it to end and can’t wait to find out what happens next in Sweet Pearl. The other thing that I loved about Sweet Evil is the title. You don’t realize how perfect the title is until you read the book because although Anna is sweet and it’s obvious that she has embraced her angel side the most, one must never forget that she’s part demon and also has a bit of evil running through her veins.

If you’re looking for a dark, seductive, deliciously wicked story that’s all-consuming and will leave you breathless and hungering for more with the turn of ever page, then Sweet Evil by Wendy Higgins is a MUST READ. I’ll definitely be recommending this precious little gem to my friends.

Author Review: Beautiful Bastard by Christina Lauren

Beautiful Bastard by Christina Lauren
Imprint: Gallery Books
Publisher: Simon and Schuster Publishing
Genre: Contemporary, Erotic Romance
Length: 320 pages

Amazon Kindle Barnes and Noble Nook

Summary:

An ambitious intern. A perfectionist executive. And a whole lot of name calling.

Whip-smart, hardworking, and on her way to an MBA, Chloe Mills has only one problem: her boss, Bennett Ryan. He’s exacting, blunt, inconsiderate–and completely irresistible. A Beautiful Bastard.

Bennett has returned to Chicago from France to take a vital role in his family’s massive media business. He never expected that the assistant who’d been helping him from abroad was the gorgeous, innocently provocative–completely infuriating–creature he now has to see every day. Despite the rumors, he’s never been one for a workplace hookup. But Chloe’s so tempting he’s willing to bend the rules–or outright smash them–if it means he can have her. All over the office.

As their appetites for one another increase to a breaking point, Bennett and Chloe must decide exactly what they’re willing to lose in order to win each other.

Originally only available online as The Office by tby789–and garnering over 2 million reads on fanfiction sites–Beautiful Bastard has been extensively updated for re-release.

Blackraven’s Review:

Wowza! Beautiful Bastard is the perfect title for this scintillating, sexy read that is guaranteed to melt your e-reader while keeping your panties ripped and wet from the explosive sex. I loved how Ms. Lauren used angry sex between two strong willed characters who disliked one another with a passion to bring Bennett and Chloe’s relationship to the forefront. The reader is immediately thrust into their world of unleashed, pent-up lust that’s stifling enough to make your head spin. Add to that Bennett and Chloe’s sarcasm toward one another, as well as their quick wit and you have one smoking hot, yet sensual love story that will keep the reader on his/her toes until the final page is read.

Bennett is powerful, driven, sexy, intelligent and one beautiful bastard who has lusted after Chloe since day one. While he hides his lust and foreplay behind snide comments, anger, and being a bastard, it’s obvious that when these two are in the same room together sparks fly. I enjoyed how Ms. Lauren allowed the reader insight into each character’s psyche. Moreover, as the story progressed and our hero and heroine’s relationship blossomed, I wondered what it would take for them to truly admit the deep feelings they were hiding below the surface from one another.

Chloe is intelligent with a sharp business mind, sexy, hardworking and knows exactly how to handle Bennett. I loved that she gives as good as she gets and never backs down from him. In my opinion, their dialogue was very refreshing because Ms. Lauren created a world in which these two were able to truly speak their minds. If we could only do that in the real world. While some of the dialogue was a little far-fetched in regards to what normally happens in the business world between employer and employee, I couldn’t help but fantasize about how cool it would be to have a sexy, scrumptious boss for a beautiful bastard who would take me in the heat of passion in a conference room on more than one occasion. :) But when lust turns to love and the lines of communication and respect blur and become confusing, will Chloe and Bennett’s relationship survive the aftermath?

The secondary characters were also well-developed and helped the story progress. I loved the back and forth banter between Bennett and his brother Henry. It’s obvious that the entire family truly cared about one another, as well as Chloe. I’d love to know how Henry and his wife ended up together. :) Sara and Julia are awesome friends and I love how they come to Chloe’s defense, even when she’s unsure of what’s really happening in her relationship with Bennett. Ms. Lauren does an excellent job of allowing the reader to watch the hero and heroine transform into deeper characters who not only love one another, but also quickly realize that they can’t live without one another. Well, as quickly as you can in a 320 page book. The plot is part reality, part fantasy, which in my opinion, just makes for an extremely entertaining read.

Ms. Lauren has definitely penned her own version of Fifty Shades of Grey and Bared To You using the love hate trope that keeps the plot moving and the sex smoking H.O.T. The characters are engaging yet vulnerable, the dialogue is fluid, the lingerie is sinfully sexy, and the love is so endearing that it will make you laugh and swoon all at the same time. I couldn’t get enough of this riveting read that quickly grabbed my attention from page one. I can’t wait to see what Christina Lauren has up her sleeve next for Sara. So, if you haven’t picked up a copy of Beautiful Bastard, then do so today because you are definitely missing out on one intense, passionate love affair that will simply leave your breathless.

Author Review: The Ideal Man by Julie Garwood

The Ideal Man by Julie Garwood
Imprint: Signet
Publisher: Penguin Publishing
Genre: Romantic Suspense
Length: 352 pages

Amazon Kindle Barnes and Noble Nook

Summary:

A woman’s life and love are compromised in this pulse-pounding new thriller by #1 New York Times bestselling author Julie Garwood…

Dr. Ellie Sullivan has witnessed the shooting of an FBI agent in pursuit of a ruthless modern-day Bonnie and Clyde known as the Landrys. The only person to see the shooter’s face, Ellie is suddenly thrust into the center of a criminal investigation spearheaded by the no-nonsense, by-the-book, and tantalizingly handsome agent Max Daniels.

With the Landrys captured, she’ll be called to testify. But the Landrys have been caught before, and each time the witnesses are scared into silence—or disappear. Now Max vows to be Ellie’s shadow, promising never to leave her side until the trial. But that could be dangerous for both of them, and it isn’t long before the sparks—and the bullets—fly.

AJ’s Review:

Julie Garwood has penned a riveting romantic suspense that’s fast-paced and action packed. The sexual tension between Ellie and Max sizzles as they navigate the tricky waters of not falling-head-over heels in love with one another. Add to this complex relationship a psychopath hell bent on killing Ellie, a group of hardened criminals hell bent on killing Ellie, and a bridezilla of a sister hell bent on killing Ellie and this makes for one intense, yet at times hilarious story that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the last page is read.

Dr. Ellie Sullivan is beyond intelligent, talented, accomplished in her profession at such a young age, fierce, and currently swooning over the sexy, brooding FBI Agent, Max Daniels. With each encounter the sexual tension between these two snaps, crackles, and pops. Their witty banter and moments of sarcasm only increases the foreplay as these two begin a dangerous journey to keep Ellie alive at all costs.

Max is powerful, bold, brooding, possessive when it comes to protecting the people he considers his, and sexy as sin. Believe me when I say that he considers Ellie as his, even if he initially struggles with the idea. I loved watching these two unravel each other amongst the mountain of drama that is constantly occurring throughout the book. But once the danger ends, will Ellie and Max be able to go their separate ways, or will they own up to their feelings to embrace the Happily Ever After they both so rightfully deserve?

The secondary characters are a big part of what makes this story. While I loved Annie who was kind, sweet, and heartbroken, I wanted to pummel her twin sister Ava who was the devil incarnate. Selfish much???? Ava is one bridezilla who needed a beat down in my book. Her crass, over the top attitude made me want to slap her on more than one occasion. And when I discovered what she and her fiance had done to Ellie, I disliked her even more. Ellie’s parents were truly stuck between a rock and a hard place because how do you choose between your children. All I can say is that given Ellie’s situation, she’s was a better person than I think I could have been given the conflict that Ava and John had created. Ellie’s aunts were a hoot and the townspeople were just an extension of the characters which increased the depth and humor of this fantastic book on many levels. As for the psycho Evan Patterson, he stepped right out of a Criminal Minds series. Add to that the bounty on Ellie’s head and this made for one action-packed story full of angst to keep the reading begging for more with the turn of every page.

Ms. Garwood definitely had done her homework, as the hospital scenes and police investigation were so descriptive and lifelike that it was like watching an episode of SVU: Criminal Intent or ER. The dialogue is believable, the characters are flawed yet lovable, the sex scenes between Ellie and Max are a combination of raw and sensual, the humor and sarcasm placed throughout the book was the perfect touch to release some of the tension as the danger escalated, and the emotions were raw and honest. The Ideal Man is full of three-dimensional characters and suspense that will grab the reader by the throat from page one. One of the things that I loved the most about The Ideal Man was how Ms. Garwood allowed the story to play out until the very end. Some authors have a tendency to rush the ending in a suspense novel, but not Ms. Garwood. While the reader knew who presented the danger toward our hero and heroine, he/she didn’t know how it was all going to evolve and that’s what made The Ideal Man such a riveting read. Julie Garwood is a new author to me, but I guarantee you that I will be checking out the rest of her books because if they’re anything like The Ideal Man, then she has a new fan in this reviewer. Bravo Ms. Garwood! for ROCKING MY WORLD with The Ideal Man. I’ll definitely be recommending this precious little gem to my friends.

Author Review: Stealing Home by Jennifer Seasons

Stealing Home by Jennifer Seasons
Series: A Diamonds and Dugouts Novel, Book One
Imprint: Avon Impulse
Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers
Genre: Contemporary, Erotic Romance
Length: 368 pages

Amazon Kindle Barnes and Noble Nook

This review was provided by the publisher through Edelweiss.

Summary:

Love may be just a game, but the baseball players in Jennifer Seasons’ sexy diamonds and dugouts series— they’re playing for keeps!

Mark Cutter has it all: a lucrative baseball career, fast cars, and faster women—and all thanks to his priceless good luck charm. At least, that’s what he thinks before Lorelei Littleton shows up. Next thing he knows, he’s waking up alone, the sexy brunette has vanished, and his good luck charm is gone. More than a little curious about the wicked-hot cat burglar and determined to get his property back, Mark’s going to track down the thief and make her pay—big time.

Maybe Lorelei feels a tiny bit guilty for stealing Mark’s good luck charm, but when it’s worth $100,000 and the money could save her niece’s life? She’s not losing sleep over it . . . but him? Lorelei can’t get the ballplayer with the bad attitude out of her head. And now he’s come after her with more than just revenge in his eyes. Lorelei has a choice: turn over the charm and lose the money, or keep it and risk losing everything . . . including her heart.

AJ’s Review:

Ms.Seasons has hit a home run with her debut novel, Stealing Home. The plot is compelling, the drama is better than any daytime soap opera, the characters are genuine and simply leap off the pages, and the sexual chemistry between Mark and Lorelei sizzles with unbridled passion. I couldn’t get enough of this dynamic duo and ended up reading Stealing Home in one sitting, which is amazing given that baseball isn’t my favorite sport. Yet, with Ms. Seasons’ vivid descriptions of the game, I have a whole new perspective of just how exciting baseball can be.

Mark Cutter is sex-on-a-stick. He can have any woman he wants except the one who quickly steals his heart without him realizing it. He loves baseball, his family, and his current life with frivolous one-night stands. That is until he meets Lorelei Littleton who turns his life upside down in a blink of an eye. But Mark has a few secrets that he’s guarding with everything in his being. Will Mark trust Lorelei enough to divulge his dark secret that could change their relationship forever?

Lorelei Littleton has dreams that have remained in the back of her mind for years. She’s loved and lost more than anyone should ever have to in a lifetime. Her love for her family is unwavering, which leads her into a predicament with Mark Cutter that will change her life forever. What I loved about Lorelei the most was her spunk, gumption and caring heart.  But will Lorelei learn to trust and open her heart to the only man who can help her family?

The secondary characters brought humor, complexity, and depth to the plot. I loved the sarcasm and witty banter between the baseball players. It brought the story to life and increased the believability of the plot. Moreover, the dynamics between Lorelei, Logan and Michelle will take the reader through a myriad of emotions that range from sorrow, to anger, to unwavering love. My heart broke for this family and all they had endured over the years. In addition, I loved the dynamics between Mark and his sister, Leslie, who helped lighten the mood with their ribbing and increased the dimension of each character. Dina is a character who you will love to hate and can’t wait for her to get what she truly deserves. The dialogue is rich and fluid, the fear and heartbreak is palpable, and the sex is smoldering hot.

Ms. Seasons has penned a group of characters who are flawed yet lovable and will quickly find a place in your heart. Their emotions are raw and genuine, and the plot will warm your heart as Lorelei and Mark struggle to find their Happily Ever After. The passion that these two have for one another is unbridled and at times almost desperate because it’s obvious that one cannot breathe without the other. Lorelei and Mark are soul mates who truly belong together. I can’t wait to see what Ms. Seasons has up her sleeve for JP, the next Rush player to lose his heart and soul. :)

Author Review: The Sex by Laura Tolomei

The Sex by Laura Tolomei
Series: The Virtus Saga, Book One
Publisher: eXtasy Books
Genre: Dark Urban Fantasy, Erotic Romance, M/M/F, M/F, M/M, Menage a Trois
Length: 246 pages

Amazon Kindle Barnes and Noble Nook

Summary:

If Sendar stood a chance, perhaps it would be thanks to the arbitrary twists and turns of a blind destiny. Or maybe someone would discover the truth about the ancient ways and compromise our peaceful existence forever. Either way, people needed a hero to shed new light on the age-old mysteries. And he was just about to answer their prayers.

AJ’s Review:

Ms. Tolomei has penned a riveting story that will take the reader through a myriad of emotions that range from anger to sorrow to unbridled passion. Any book that can accomplish such a feat is FREAK-IN-FANTASTIC in my opinion. The characters are well-developed and three-dimensional, the dialogue is refreshing and bold, the emotions are raw and untamed, the world building is amazing and intriguing, and the sex is explosive and uninhibited. I simply couldn’t get enough of this well-crafted story and read it in one sitting.

Prince Caldwell is sexy, intelligent and at times heartless. His character left me with conflicting emotions. On one hand, he’s kind to Yilanor and it’s obvious that he cares about her. However, just as soon as Chris (a.k.a. Lord Templeton) who is also his lover enters the picture, he treats her inhumanely and I must admit that it pissed me off. I wanted to pummel Prince Caldwell and Lord Templeton on many occasions throughout the book. I don’t know if I would have been as trusting and patient as Yilanor was given her predicament.

Yilanor is a smart, sexy, strong woman with gumption who simply broke my heart. She had endured so much at the hand of other peoples’ jealousy and inability to understand her true nature. I loved how Ms. Tolomei shed more light on her character, especially as the story progressed and the reader was able to gain a better understanding of the trials and tribulations that Yilanor had endured over the years. It was obvious that she loved Prince Caldwell and would do anything for him, even to her own detriment, which was somewhat disconcerting.

It took a lot for me to even begin liking Lord Templeton. Most of the time he’s childish, snide, and simply ruthless when it comes to Yilanor. He takes every opportunity afforded him to make her feel like dirt and for that I wanted to smack him upside the head. While Ms. Tolomei shedded more light on Chris’ psyche, it still didn’t justify his poor pissed behavior. In fact, there was a point in the book that he kept using his past to justify his poor behavior which was unacceptable in my book.

All feelings aside, these three are destined to be together in one way or another and that’s where the suspense begins for me. Although Ms. Tolomei provides a few clues throughout the book, she leaves more questions than answers in her wake as Prince Caldwell, Lord Templeton, and Yilanor travel to The Nephis Valley. Ms. Tolomei piqued my curiosity regarding Yilanor, Prince Caldwell, and Lord Templeton’s Virts and the power that is generated from them. I’m curious not only how all of their Virts work, but also how sex seems to feed them, as well as allow them to communicate with one another more freely. Trust me when I say that the sex is hot enough to scorch your eyebrows, which makes The Sex the perfect title for the first book in this amazing series. Yilanor, Prince Caldwell and Lord Templeton’s appetites for sex is voracious and decadent. If the sex scenes don’t melt your panties, then nothing else will. :)

The secondary characters are just as intriguing as our heroes and heroine. They all have secrets that they’re hiding and I must admit that I can’t wait to see how they all fit into the overall grand scheme of things. Each secondary character is also well-developed and add depth and complexity not only to the plot, but also to the relationship that is forging between our heroes and heroine. The stakes are high and who will come out the winner remains to be seen as Prince Caldwell, Yilanor, and Lord Templeton’s destiny is molded into what it was truly meant to be. Will this dynamic trio embrace their destiny or will the past and jealousy keep them off-course; thereby, destroying any future that they might ever have, which could possibly be strong enough to span the test of time.

The Sex is dark, edgy, and raw, especially when it comes to our heroes and heroine’s emotions and sexual proclivities. Laura Tolomei has crafted an amazing dark, urban fantasy with engaging characters who are so flawed and full of anger, as well as unrequited lust and passion that it’s amazing they haven’t killed one another either literally or through their bouts of sexacapdes. The plot is well-developed, the emotions are intense and raw, and the sex scenes are uninhibited and full of passionate lust that will draw the reader into their web decadent pleasures with the turn of every page. What an amazing group of characters who simply leap off the pages to bring this tantalizing story to life. Bravo Ms. Tolomei, as you’ve hit the ball out of the park with The Sex, the first book in The Virtus Saga series. I can’t wait to see what happens next.

She throws light on the shadows of Chicago’s underworld, challenging everything she knew and the man she’s come to love. “This story is emotional, dark, erotic, suspenseful, traumatic and raw. It will have your heart hurting yet you will laugh plenty too. I can highly recommend this series.” -TotallyBookedBlog

“Emotional, angsty, and just enough suspense to keep you hooked to the very end.” -SmexyBooks

AJ’s Review:

Amber Lin has penned a suspenseful story that thrusts the reader into the gritty, dark, dangerous world of prostitution and crooked cops. The dialogue is fresh, the characters are wounded, vulnerable, strong, flawed, and lovable, the emotions are raw, and the dangerous roller coaster that Ms. Lin takes the reader on in search of the truth, redemption, and revenge is thrilling. While Selling Out can be read as a standalone, I highly recommend checking out the first book in the series, Giving It Up.

I instantly liked Shelly for her gumption and willingness to do what was right when push came to shove. What really drew me to her character was her willingness to sacrifice herself in order to protect the people she cared about, or in this case, didn’t even know. Her kind heart and caring manner will make you root for her to find a way out of a life of prostitution. My heart simply broke for her as she struggled to go legit and learn to love herself.

Luke is sexy, strong, and head-over-heels in love with Shelly, but he has some secrets of his own that definitely has left a crack in his veneer. What I loved about him most is that he loved Shelly unconditionally because he understood her better than anyone realized. The sexual chemistry between these two sizzled with the turn of every page as they eventually forged together to fight the bad guys. But as secrets are unveiled about Shelly and Luke, will their love for one another survive the truth, as well as the evil hunting them?

The secondary characters increased the depth of the story as the reader is provided more insight about our hero and heroine. I love when an author provides the reader with updates on the previous characters in the series. The witty banter and sarcasm that’s placed throughout the book holds a few poignant moments that will take you through a myriad of emotions that range from anger to heartbreak. Things are never what they seem in Selling Out as each character has a secret they are carefully guarding. But when the lies are brought to the forefront, you can’t help but wonder who will survive.

Selling Out if full of vivid scenes that at times will break your heart and at other times send a chill down your spine. Ms. Lin has crafted a compelling plot with engaging characters who are well-developed, genuine, and simply leap off the page. It’s obvious that Amber Lin did her homework in regards to life on the streets because she brings the gritty, dark, edgy, dangerous world of prostitution to life with a touch of reality that’s undeniable. I’d definitely recommend Selling Out to my friends. Bravo Ms. Lin! You’ve hit a home run with Selling out.

Author Review: Fever by Maya Banks

Fever by Maya Banks
Series: The Breathless Trilogy, Book 2
Publisher: Berkley
Genre: Contemporary, Erotic Romance, BDSM
Length: 417 pages

Amazon Kindle Barnes and Noble Nook

Summary:

Jace, Ash, and Gabe: three of the wealthiest, most powerful men in the country. They’re accustomed to getting anything they want. Anything at all. For Jace, it’s a woman whose allure takes him completely by surprise…

Jace Crestwell, Ash McIntyre, and Gabe Hamilton have been best friends and successful business partners for years. They’re powerful, they’re imposing, they’re irresistibly sexy, and Jace and Ash share everything—including their women.

When they meet Bethany, Jace begins to feel things he’s never experienced before: jealousy, and a powerful obsession that threatens him, overwhelms him—and excites him beyond control.

Jace isn’t sharing Bethany—with anyone. He’s determined to be the only man in her life, and it’s jeopardizing a lifelong friendship with Ash. Bethany will be his and his alone. Even if it means turning his back on his best friend.

AJ’s Review:

When I read Rush, the first book in Maya Banks The Breathless Trilogy, I thought that Gabe was intense, but after reading Fever, Jace makes Gabe’s intensity look like childs play. Wow! Ms. Banks has penned a riveting story that centers around possessiveness, undying love, addiction, and homelessness. I loved that Maya Banks wasn’t afraid to write a gritty story that’s edgy and realistic.

Jace Crestwell is dark, edgy, rich, possessive, caring, and completely unraveled when he meets Bethany. It’s obvious that he wants the sexy woman all for himself, but is too afraid to tell his best friend Ash. I must admit that Jace’s ups and downs when it came to Bethany took me on the roller coaster ride of my life. The intense passion that he felt for this vulnerable, damaged woman who was kind and had a heart of gold was obvious, yet his mouth, quick temper and reactions kept getting him into trouble. There were times that I wanted to slap him like Cher did Nicholas Cage in Moonstruck so that he would think before he reacted. Yet, there were times my heart went out to him because it was also obvious that he was treading in unknown waters. While the sex was raw and uninhibited, yet at times, sensual to the point that it would make you swoon, the love and possessiveness was so powerful that you couldn’t help but be swept into Jace and Bethany’s world.

Bethany is young, vulnerable, loyal, strong and desperate for someone to take control, which makes her the perfect woman for Jace. I loved her character because even when she was down and struggling with her addiction, she kept fighting. This woman had gumption and a new found sense of pride that made me want to not only help her, but also hope that she found her Happily Ever After. While there were times that I wanted to scream at her for being so trusting when it came to Jack, I understood her loyalty to him given everything that they had been through over the years.

I loved how Ms. Banks provided us with updates regarding Mia and Gabe. The dynamics between the secondary characters was more in depth in Fever than Rush because each of their relationships were affected as a result of Jace’s desire for Bethany. For example, there were times that he was simply a madman who couldn’t see reason and the more his friends tried to help, the more he kept pushing them away with his quick temper and snap judgments. But like true friends and family, they continued to stick by one another through thick and thin, which made the characters more believable and genuine. Mia is one of my favorite characters because she has a big heart. I loved how she welcomed Bethany with open arms, but more importantly without judgment. Once again, I wanted to slap Jace for being such an a** to Ash. Yet, when Ash called him on the carpet and laid down the 411 as to the reason he was being so crazy and punishing him and Bethany for the past, I couldn’t help but pump my fist in the air and say Yes!. I can’t wait for Ash’s story because whatever woman wins his heart will have it forever and that hottie is going to fall hard.

While the dialogue is fresh, I must admit that I had a few issues with some of the lingo the men used given their age and financial status. Moreover, while I enjoy the term “baby” as an endearment, there were times that it was a little overused. With all that being said, I think Fever is a wonderful addition to The Breathless Trilogy series. Ms. Banks has crafted a riveting read that’s full of grit and edge as each character tries to find some balance in their new relationship. The part of the plot that centers around Bethany’s homelessness and addiction was believable and had me engrossed until the very end. It’s obvious that Ms. Banks did her homework.

Fever will take the reader on an emotional roller coaster ride with it’s powerful characters, heated passion, loyal friendships, dramatic family dynamics, and scorching hot sex. So, if you haven’t picked up a copy, then do so today. You won’t be sorry. I can’t wait to see what Ms. Banks has in store for Ash in Burn. :)

Publisher: Harlequin Desire
Genre: Contemporary Romance (Hot!)
Length: 192 pages

Amazon Kindle Barnes and Noble Nook

This review copy was received from the publisher through NetGalley.

Summary:

From New York Times bestselling author Brenda Jackson-The first of a new trilogy starring three Westmorelands who are impossible to resist: Zane, Canyon and Stern.

No woman walks away from Zane Westmoreland. But when Channing Hastings does just that, it leaves the rancher reeling-and then she returns to town engaged! Zane will do whatever it takes to show her that there is no man for her but him.

AJ’s Review:

I love The Westmorelands and couldn’t wait for Zane’s story, which I read in one sitting. Ms. Jackson has penned a compelling story that’s full of drama, sizzling sexual chemistry between the hero and heroine, and ultimately, unwavering love.

Zane is all alpha. He’s sexy, pigheaded, intelligent, and oblivious when it comes to his true feelings for Channing. There were times that I wanted to shake some sense into him. Of course, that was right after I wanted to slap him upside the head for hurting Channing. It was obvious that the man was head-over-heels in love with Channing. Well, obvious to everyone except Zane. However, I must admit, when the light bulb finally came on, that man was willing to move Heaven and Earth to get to the only woman who would ever owned his heart and soul…Channing Hastings.

Channing is smart, sexy, prideful, and head-over-heels in love with Zane. While her head keeps telling her that there’s no future for her with Zane, her heart simply won’t listen. But as time goes on, Channing must decide whether to keep being vulnerable to the sexy cowboy, or close her heart off to love forever. What will happen when Channing relinquishes her rose-covered glasses and finally gives up on love?

The secondary characters are a big part of what makes this riveting story more entertaining. I loved Zane’s sisters and cousins as they gave him grief for hurting Channing. The family dynamics is mesmerizing and engaging as always with The Westmorelands. You can’t help but be drawn into their world and ultimately begin feeling as though you’re a part of their family. The dialogue is crisp and realistic, the characters are genuine and down-to-Earth, the sex is smoldering, and the love is so endearing that it will make your heart swell with joy.

If you haven’t tried Ms. Jackson’s The Westmoreland series then you’re definitely missing out. Brenda Jackson is a mastermind at creating characters and series with heart and soul. While the plot may be a work of fiction, the situations are as realistic as they come. So, grab a snack and a drink and let Ms. Jackson whisk you into her world of romance with Zane, the latest Westmoreland to lose his heart and soul to a stunning woman that’s full of life and love.

AJ’s Review

PURE GENIUS! are the two words that come to mind after reading Lorelei James’ latest release in the Rough Riders series, Short Rides. Ms. James is a mastermind at combining fantasy, fiction, and real life situations to pen compelling stories that warm your heart, put a smile on your face, and heat up your body in all the right places. Short Rides is the perfect compliment to the Rough Riders series for readers who need a quick fix of some of their favorite characters.

King of Hearts

In King of Hearts, Ms. James delves into the difficult subject of PTSD and the struggles that veterians deal with on a daily basis. She handles this difficult topic with finesse, class, and reality as Cam McKay’s struggles with PTSD pushes itself once again to the forefront of his mind after he’s called to the scene of a murder/suicide. What increased the depth of this short story is how Ms. James focused on the importance of family and friends to help victims of PTSD. Add a few smoldering love scenes, some rambunctious kids who will steal your heart and put a smile on your face, and a loving wife who’s determined to help her man fight his demons and you have an awesome short read that will keep you engaged until the very end.

Rough Road

In Rough Road, we get a glimspe of how things are going for Chassie, Trevor and Edgard Glanzer. I love this polyamorous relationship and was excited to see how things were going with this dynamic trio and their children. While things are great on the homefront, outside of it is another story. Chassie, Trevor and Edgard knew that the untraditional lifestyle they had chosen to lead wouldn’t be easy, but when it begins to affect their children, these three must ban together and allow some family members to assist in making the hardest decision of their lives. Ms. James has created a riveting story that entails bigoted people who don’t understand how much love the heart can handle. Instead, they pose their views on the Glanzer family and begin instilling hate in their children. Rough Road is as real as it gets and there are individuals and families dealing with these same issues at some level on a daily basis. I loved how Ms. James didn’t sugarcoat the situation. She emphasized that life is hard and unfortunately, we can’t protect our children from everything. But it’s imperative that we stand up for what we believe not only for our own sakes, but also for our children even when things get tough. Furthermore, she emphasizes that no one person or family is an island of it’s own, so it’s important to ask for help from your larger family when the going gets tough because if you’re a McKay or West, they have your back. :)

All Knocked Up

All Knocked Up is the perfect title for this at times hiliarious, riveting story as the reader is allowed to witness how Jack and Keely have grown over the years. The witty banter and sarcasm still exist in this dynamic duo’s realtionship, but also the unwavering love that these two have for one another. I must admit that Keely and Jack are two of my favorite Rough Riders’ characters, so I was estatic to see how they were doing. The chemistry is still smoking hot after four years of marriage and the start of a family. Ms. James does an excellent job of showing how a couple’s life changes once they begin having kids and it ranges from the mother’s body after childbirth, to their sex life, to the early morning feedings, and simple exhaustion of it all. But more importantly, Ms. James shows how a man and woman who desperately love one another can work through anythng as long as they keep the lines of communication open.

I absolutely loved Short Rides and hope that Ms. James will do more of these short anthologies that bring us up to speed with our favorite characters. The dialogue remains crisp, witty, and fluid, the characters are genuine, flawed, and lovable, and the situations are as real as they come. If you haven’t picked up a copy of Short Rides, then do so today. Ms. James has hit a homerun with her first self-published anthology and I for one want more of them. Bravo Ms. James and thanks for bringing a little more joy into my world with your Rough Riders series.

Excerpt:

“Mama, what’s a faggot?”

Chassie’s entire body seized up and she nearly dropped the bowl she was washing. She turned her head and met the startled eyes of her husband Trevor, who was packaging leftovers on the counter beside her. She managed to ask, “Where’d you hear that word?” in a steady voice.

“At school. A third-grader said my dads were faggots.”

She briefly closed her eyes. Living an unconventional lifestyle in a conservative rural area guaranteed this question would come up at some point—but she hadn’t expected it this soon. Their six-year-old son Westin had just started first grade a month ago.

Chassie rinsed and dried her hands before she turned around. “How about if we wait to talk about it until Papai is done giving Max his bath? You can stay up a little later tonight.”

Westin’s big blue eyes were somber, suspicious of the bribe. But he nodded and returned to his “homework”—an activity book they’d purchased after his disappointment at not having schoolwork every night in first grade.

Trevor came over and set his hands on her shoulders. He kissed her temple and whispered, “Come on, Chass. Baby, take a deep breath. We’ll get through this. That word doesn’t have the power to destroy what we’ve built unless we let it.”

She nuzzled his jaw. “I know that. It’s just…”

“Mama!” A little person slammed into the backs of her legs. She glanced down. A naked little person.

Two-year-old Max grinned at her, his brown eyes triumphant, his dark hair sopping wet.

Edgard sauntered into the kitchen, a bath towel draped over his forearm. “That boy is as slippery as an eel.” He wrapped the towel around Max like a straightjacket and hoisted him up amidst Max’s happy shrieks and giggles. “Kiss Mama and Daddy goodnight, little streaker. Then if we can wrassle your jammies on fast, we’ll have time for one book.”

“Two books!”

Chassie smooched both of Max’s chubby cheeks and smoothed her hand over his wet hair. “’Night, Max. Love you.”

Trevor kissed Max’s forehead. “Love you son, ’night.”

Edgard’s gaze winged between Chassie and Trevor. He mouthed, “Problem?”

“I’ll fill you in upstairs. I need to check on Sophia anyway,” Trevor said. He looked at Chassie. “I’ll tuck her in if she hasn’t already crashed.”

Four-year-old Sophia ran at such high speed all day that many nights she conked out while watching TV or playing in her room.

The guys disappeared upstairs.

Chassie finished cleaning the kitchen and headed to the basement to throw a load of clothes in the washer. Her mind had locked on Westin’s question. She knew one thing about her thoughtful son—the taunt hadn’t been tossed at him just today. Westin tried to figure things out on his own, so she worried he’d been dealing with defining the nasty word for longer than a day.

She leaned against the wall, fighting tears, fighting memories of the cruelty directed at her growing up. The jeers—lazy Indian, ugly squaw—still lingered years later. Back then she’d been so shy she hadn’t fought back. Her brother Dag might’ve gone after her tormentors, but he’d been fighting his own demons. No doubt he’d had the word faggot hurled at him.

What really caused that long ago hurt to deepen was the knowledge that if their father had known Dag’s sexual orientation, he would’ve flung that word at his son without hesitation.

When Chassie, Edgard and Trevor decided to add kids to their family, they all three worked every day to make sure their children knew they were loved. To make sure their children knew their parents loved each other. And to show them that love is what built and what sustained their lives. Especially when it was love that a lot of people didn’t understand.

Chassie held on to that thought as she scaled the stairs.

* * * *

Trevor plugged in the nightlight and left the door open a crack before he headed down the hallway to the master bedroom.

He removed his long-sleeved shirt and T-shirt, tossing them in the hamper along with his dirty jeans. After washing his face and arms, he slipped on a pair of black sweatpants and a gray tank top. He’d need to channel his frustration after they talked to Westin, because guaranteed he’d wanna punch the shit out of something.

Faggots. Who taunted a kid—a kind, innocent little boy—with that term?

You would have.

Goddamn. Trevor didn’t want to think along those lines, to remember the judgmental asshole he’d been at one time. He’d been raised that way—as had Chassie and Edgard—which was why they were raising their kids differently.

He perched on the edge of their gigantic custom-made bed, forearms resting on his thighs, his face aimed at the carpet. Westin and Sophia were aware their family was different from the norm. But due to divorces and remarriages, didn’t most kids these days deal with multiple parents? How was it anyone’s business how they lived in their own home? Or how they loved each other? He’d bet the ranch very few traditional family units were as attuned to each other as theirs. They had to work harder at communication because of having a third partner. And he wouldn’t have it any other way—regardless of the societal repercussions.

Footsteps fell across the carpet. A pause. “Did you mean to leave the light on in Sophia’s room?” Edgard asked.

“No. Guess my mind was elsewhere.” Trevor glanced up. “Was she still awake?”

“Nah. She just yanked the covers over her head. I shut the light off.”

“Thanks. And Max?”

“Out. He didn’t last through one book, let alone two.” Edgard gave Trevor a once-over. “We working out tonight?”

“I’ll need to hit the heavy bag after…”

“After what?”

He sighed.

“Trev, what’s goin’ on?”

So Trevor told him.

Edgard didn’t say anything. Then he crouched in front of Trevor to get his attention. “That’s not all of what’s bugging you.”

The man knew him so well. Trevor reached out and ran the back of his knuckles along Edgard’s jaw. He hadn’t shaved for a day and Trevor had the sudden need to feel beard burn on the inside of his thighs. On his chest. Scraping on his cheeks and neck as he kissed Edgard senseless.

“Dangerous to keep lookin’ at me like that, meu amor. Burning me alive with those fiery eyes of yours won’t make me forget the issue at hand, as much as I’d like to.”

“I know.” Trevor dropped his hand. “I fuckin’ hate that I used to be that type of kid Westin is dealin’ with. Anything I didn’t understand, I belittled. I laughed when I made kids cry. Laughed. Jesus. How many people I bullied growing up would say I’m getting what I deserve? Seeing my son cry.” He exhaled. “I’m to the point I can handle what anyone calls us. But it breaks my damn heart that Westin is hearing that shit.”

“Hey. You’re not the same man you were. Thank God for that.” Edgard stood and held his hand out to Trevor. “Worrying about karma coming back to bite you in the ass won’t help us now.”

As soon as he was upright, Trevor tugged Edgard against his body and buried his face in Edgard’s neck. “I’m grateful every damn day that we have this life.”

“Me too. We knew goin’ into it, it wouldn’t be easy.”

“Some days I can’t believe we’ve all been together eight years. And other days, I feel like my life started when I met Chassie and you came back.” Trevor lifted his head. “Do you think we oughta cancel—”

Edgard covered his mouth with a brief kiss. “No. The three of us need the time together. Chassie will be relieved that we’d planned to keep Westin out of school tomorrow anyway.”

“So we’re all set?”

“Yep.”

Trevor grinned. “Chass is really gonna be surprised.”

“I was surprised. It was a sweet, romantic thing to plan, Trev.”

“What can I say? You and Chassie bring out the best in me.” Trevor kissed him, more than a soft peck but less than the tongue tangling soul kiss he preferred. “Let’s go talk to our son.”
