The Ice Prince by Jessica Freely
Publisher: Loose-Id
Genre: GLBT, M/M, Contemporary
Length: 155 pages

Summary:
The habit of silence is hard to break.
Isolated by a cold and lonely past, David was on his own until Seth came along. Together they’ve forged a life full of love, friendship, and scorching hot sex. But just days before Christmas, David discovers a long buried secret that sheds new light on the father who rejected him.
The revelation dredges up painful memories and threatens to exile him to an icy land of silence. When Seth opens their home to a young man in trouble, David withdraws even more in a misguided effort to deal with his confusion and jealousy. The fact that the bookshop he’s worked at since high school is in danger of closing just makes everything worse. Seth wants him to talk about his problems, but what good are words when they can’t pierce his unresolved grief?
Seth is worried about David. Something’s wrong and he won’t talk about it. Day by day, he’s closing himself off, and everything Seth does to try to reach him just drives them further apart. As the holiday’s approach, both men will learn valuable lessons from unexpected sources, but the most important will be the secret to melting a frozen heart.
Publisher’s Note: This book contains explicit sexual content, graphic language, and situations that some readers may find objectionable: male/male sexual practices.
Sofi’s Review:
Ice Prince was well worth the read. I enjoyed the story, and was surprised, after everything these guys went through in Rust Belt ,that there was any story left to tell. However, you soon discover that although they weathered a rough storm together–more than one, in fact–both David and Seth have a lot of room to learn and grow as people, and that puts a lot of strain on their relationship.
That character development went hand in hand with a good plot. There are things, little bits and pieces of revelation in the first book that were never really explained, and those bits are what haunt this story. David’s past, only slightly hinted at when Seth’s drama was front and center, comes to the fore in Ice Prince and since his past is so much a part of how he deals with his present, it definitely has an effect on his relationship with Seth.
In the end, you can’t help but feel for these two, as they battle problems that are a lot harder to deal with than gangs and criminals, because these are matters of the heart, not things you can grapple with and throw down. In the process, they interact with some very compelling new characters, and as a reader, you can’t help but get attached to the other players in this story. Ms. Freely has done a wonderful job of drawing a whole new set of terrific characters to get to know and care about.
I would say the next to last chapter has a whole lot of Christmas bows tossed in there to tie up all the loose ends, and for my tastes, it’s a tiny bit of over-the-top candy-floss coating on the otherwise very satisfying bitter-sweet flavour of this book. The past is the past, after all, and you can’t go back. But going forward isn’t always guaranteed, either, and that’s something both David and Seth are forced to realize in this book.

Length: Novella

Summary:
Seven years ago, during a sultry summer by a lake, Matthieu fell in love with a man fifteen years his junior. Intelligent, passionate and talented, Roman swore he wanted nothing more than to settle down with Matthieu for the rest of his life. Matthieu couldn’t let that happen. The way he saw it, Roman had too much talent to waste with a small life and small dreams. He tried to do the right thing by severing all ties with the young man who commanded his passion, hoping that one day Roman would forgive and forget him.
That was never going to happen.
Roman has always known exactly who and what he wants — who he loves. Now that he’s found Matthieu again, Roman’s willing to do anything it takes to prove it. He’ll use his body, his music, and all his wiles to show the older man that their love is as real as their passion, and that they are meant to be together. Matthieu isn’t easily convinced, but Roman isn’t easily bested. He’s never been good at taking “no” for an answer — especially when he knows his partner well enough to be sure what he really wants to say is yes, yes, yes.
Publisher’s Note: This book contains explicit sexual content, graphic language, and situations that some readers may find objectionable: Male/male sexual practices.
Sofi’s Review:
“So that’s all right then.” Might be a bit of an understatement for this book, but it’s a start. I suppose if guitar playing main character Roman wrote music that turned into words, it might somehow resemble the lyrical, impressionistic prose Ms. Okati has put forth in Buy Your Side
There are a lot of things about this book that I loved. First and foremost was the mixture of southern drawl and sweet melody in her writing style. Everything just flowed in a lazy, small-town relaxed way perfect for the story and its setting.
Next is Roman. We should all be so lucky to have a Roman in our lives; someone who never gives up believing and trying and hoping. This strong, determined character just won my heart.
Then there’s Justine. I’ve noticed over the years, gay romance often lacks in strong, sympathetic female characters who aren’t walking stereotypes. I found Justine’s vulnerability in wanting her big brother back in her life, cast against her own personal strength, refreshing and real. She’s no push over. But she does have a soft, hopeful side.
And then, of course, there’s Matthieu. I confess, I maybe wanted to knock him over the head a bit, but even still, he has an honest, caring kind of strength that makes it believable that he would want the best for Roman. That short-sighted kindness also lets me buy that both Roman and Justine will forgive him for being a bit of a dork in not seeing what the best really is.
Overall, I loved this book for the sweet, slow drawl, the perfect symbiosis between characters, setting and style. It was an absolute joy to bask in this lazy summer journey with these characters and Ms. Okati.

Match Maker by Alan Chin
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press
Genre: M/M, GLBT, Contemporary, Erotic Romance
Length: Novel
Review Copy Received from Publisher
Summary:
In the four years since being forced off the professional tour for being gay, Daniel Bottega has taught tennis at a second-rate country club. He found a sanctuary to hide from an unkind world, while his lover, Jared Stoderling, fought a losing battle with alcohol addiction to cope with his disappointment of not playing on the pro circuit.
Now Daniel has another chance at the tour by coaching tennis prodigy Connor Lin to a Grand Slam championship win. He shares his chance with Jared by convincing him to return to the pro circuit as Connor’s doubles partner.
Competing on the world tour is challenging enough, but Daniel and Jared also face major media attention, political fallout from the pro association, and a shocking amount of hate that threatens Connor’s career in tennis, Jared’s love for Daniel, and Daniel’s very life.
Sofi’s Review:
I first picked up this book because I heard Alan Chin was good, and so when I saw one of his books come across the Black Ravens review desk, I snatched it up. I confess to having a bit of trepidation over reading a tennis book. I don’t play the sport and am not all that into watching it. After the first page, I knew there was a lot more to this book than just tennis. Mr. Chin has a definite flare for description and easily paints a picture that takes the reader far deeper than surface appearances. His ability to weave together words and dig into both the psyche of the narrator, Daniel, and the apparent mind set of the people inhabiting Daniel’s world made this a really easy book to get into despite my initial reservations. And that’s all in the first three chapters.
Those descriptions go into incredible detail during the tennis matches. Amazing how much you can see when the painting is in the right words. With my limited experience of the game, I expected to want to skim over these bits, but somehow, that didn’t happen. Instead, I found myself enthralled with the settings and the characters and the very obvious passion Mr. Chin brings to his work.
The most interesting thing about this book for me was the portrayal of men the reader has every opportunity to dislike and the compassion with which they are depicted. There is no flinching from their flaws and no skimping on displaying their strengths. When flaws turn to strength, as often happens in life, is when the reader falls in love all over again. It’s just like the love affair between Daniel and his man; sometimes it’s sweet and tender love and sometimes pure anger and frustration, but it’s always there, running hot and fierce. You can never quite quit on these characters, however hard it gets.
And I guess that’s really what the story is all about; not quitting, but staying in the game and figuring out why you’re playing. You only really lose when you quit.
I had a constant war going on with myself over the length of this book, the intricate attention to detail that wouldn’t let me skip a single word, and my inability to put it down even when the end seemed so far off for so long.
One thing that doesn’t show up a lot in romance of any kind is the idea that there’s a lot more to being in love and being a couple than meeting and falling in love. There are so few romances that deal with the day to day grind of life after first blush. Often, life has a demoralizing effect on people as individuals and the way that can tear couples apart a tiny, unnoticed bit at a time. Mr. Chin has managed to depict real life, in all it’s gory detail and still give the reader a reason to believe in happily ever after even when things look bleak. It’s a nice thought when we all live in that world of normal problems and things going wrong most of the time, to think love endures even when we think it can’t possibly.
This book, at it’s heart is all about not giving up, no matter what the obstacle, no matter what you’re fighting for, no matter what the consequences. You might not win the prize at the end of your battle, but you’ll lose for sure if you don’t try.
My Recommendation: This is not a short book, but every word was worth it. I’d definitely encourage anyone who wants to lose themselves in a sumptuous feast of imagery and emotional extremes to read Match Maker.

Why Nileas Loved the Sea by Ariel Tachna
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press
Genre: Fairy Tale, M/M, GLBT, Erotic Romance
Length: Novella
Review Copy Received from Publisher
Summary:
For years, Aeolus has fought the Sirens, trying to rescue hapless sailors from their clutches, to no avail. When he encounters Nileas, the first man to heed his warnings in time to be saved, Aeolus at last has a chance to indulge his fascination with the world of men. As they begin the long journey back to Nileas’s home at the other side of the Mediterranean, sharing stories of their respective lives, it becomes apparent Nileas is just as fascinated with the world of the sea—and with the merman who saved him.
Despite the attraction growing between them, neither can see a way past the limitations of their races. Aeolus cannot live long on land, nor Nileas survive in the sea, but their love proves stronger than Aeolus’s determination to let Nileas go. Can they find a compromise that will let them share their lives, or will they need to challenge the gods for the right to be together forever?
Sofi’s Review:
I confess to a slight obsession with merfolk, so when one of my favourite authors came out with a book about one of my favourite subjects, there was no chance I was going to miss it. The resulting reading could have been a spectacular disappointment. After all, I don’t love everything mer-people. I love good stories about them, and this is one of the better ones I’ve encountered.
Nileas is a strong character, as evidenced by his ability to survive a disagreeable, probably harsh life with his capacity for love and tenderness still whole. Maybe because he’s practical and can see the benefits of not fighting fate, he manages to see past the difficulties in the love he’s found with Aeolus and seize on the opportunity with all his will.
Aeolus has been fighting fate all his life, to the point of giving up the one thing fate seems to have thrust upon him that he actually wants; Nileas.
In exploring all the complexities of the character’s emotions, Ms. Tachna never looses sight of the hope, and that’s what kept me excited to read through to the end. Every time it seems like the pair have jumped all the hurdles, another one is placed before them. At one point, I was quite ready to give the author a piece of my mind and insist she leave the poor man alone.
But of course, she has her reasons for the torture. Greater adversity yields greater rewards, and only desperate people take drastic steps.
At the heart of it, While Nileas Loved the Sea was a tough one to put down. I panicked when the characters did and wanted the happy ending as much as they did, and that’s what a good story should do: make me want to read it.

A Forest of Corpses by P.A. Brown Publisher: MLR Press Genre: Contemporary, Erotic Romance, Suspense, GLBT, M/M Length: 252 pages
Review Copy Received from Publisher
Summary:
Welcome to the Los Padres National Forest. A vacation from hell. Can Alex and Jason survive?
In this sequel to The Geography of Murder, Santa Barbara Homicide detective Alexander Spider and his lover of seven months, Jason Zachary are still struggling to make their intense but troubled love affair work. To this end Jason talks city boy Alex into a hiking trip in Los Padres National Forest, something Alex has never done. Only his love for Jason makes him agree. Spider is not an outdoor type guy but for Jason he will go. His first introduction to ‘roughing it’ is fraught with humorous horrors. Then during an arduous backwoods hike the pair stumble on the decaying bodies of missing hikers, the most recent one barely cold. They were hikers killed for stumbling onto a major grow-op hidden in the vast wilderness. Now Alex and Jason are in a race for their lives.
Sofi’s Review:
…Finally, it dawned on me what he had done. “You Lojacked me.”
“Every minute of every day. How many times do I have to tell you your ass is mine.”
“You Lojacked my ass?”
Not many books can deliver good romance, good plot and fantastic lines that leave you smiling.
But you know, when you get to page 117 of a 253 page book and it’s all still happy families, that something nasty is in the works. Every page could bring the disaster, every new character could be the villain. Every little twist in the path could lead to the part of the story that will have you cursing the author for character cruelty. I’ve discovered Ms. Brown is a master of that particular kind of suspense. As each little shock turns out to be innocuous, you’re torn between relaxing and letting your guard down…always a bad plan…or getting even jumpier waiting for the other shoe to fall. It’s what books that are impossible to put down are made of.
Does she deliver with suitable mayhem and angst, or does she lead up to an anti-climax that will leave the reader disappointed, strung out on tension that never gets released? That’s the question right there.
And of course, Ms. Brown delivers with her usual unflinching, gut-wrenching accuracy. She makes things hard for her characters. Then she begins her story, gives them a reason to be uncertain, gives them something to fear, then introduces the twist that plunges them into the shit and takes away their shovel. She’s like that. Is it cruel? Maybe. Can her characters take it? As you read through, you think possibly not.
But where would the story be if everyone died at the end? So what if they almost die, literally, emotionally, figuratively, whatever. They never lose sight of life, love or winning through. She took both Spider and Jason out of their elements and forced them to recognize the difficulties inherent in being on the other side of that D/s dynamic and in the end, really appreciate what they have in each other. It’s amazing work, because it works on so many levels; the suspense, the romance, the adventure, the angst.
To be perfectly honest, I put off reading this. I was afraid. Afraid I’d be let down after loving the first book so much. I don’t know why I was worried. When hasMs. Brown ever let me down?
Loved it! Love Jason. Want Spider. Well, a version of him, anyway. Everyone should read this book, especially if you like D/s. And it isn’t the sex. There’s hardly any to speak of. It’s the love, the commitment, the work her characters put into their relationship, into each other, and into themselves to make themselves worthy of what the other is giving. The dynamic created in the bedroom in the first book is seriously carried through to life for these men in the second book in ways that, to my mind, are realistically true to a loving D/s relationship. Anyone who thinks women can`t write gay romance needs to read this book. She worked magic again. I am humbled for ever doubting.
My Recommendation: Just read it.

Through the Red Door by Devon Rhodes Publisher: Total-E-Bound Publishing Genre: Paranormal, Erotic Romance, M/M, GLBT, Shapeshifters, Morphers Length: Novella

Summary:
Book two in the Vampires & Mages & Weres, Oh My! Series
Just a demon’s luck. Seth finally finds the perfect house…and it comes with an angel.
The last thing that demon Seth expects to come across while house hunting is an injured angel…especially one who has no idea he’s anything but human. Every instinct in him wants to stay far away, but Kyrian is being targeted by another demon, and Seth reluctantly finds himself playing guardian to the irresistible male.
Kyrian has no idea what is ‘haunting’ his house, but after he breaks his ankle being shoved off the deck, he’s had enough. Strong, handsome Seth is a godsend, making him feel safe and secure. But he alludes to secrets that will test everything Kyrian believes…and turns the tables on just who needs protecting.
Reader Advisory: This book is part of a series, but can easily be read as a standalone book.
Sofi’s Review:
I found this a much deeper, more satisfying read than A Pint Light. The characters are just as interesting, and I get to know them a little better this time. I was pleased to be able to spend time with them. Seth is a great contrast of dominating male; all protective and surly at the same time, and he manages to convey just the right amount of uncertainty to balance Kyrian’s giving personality.
I felt a little bit like there was more to the plot that i had missed from a previous book, though I don’t think there was any other book involving the demons and angels. I’m not sure. Even with that, Ms. Rhodes has done a fair job of making sure we get all the information we need to understand the story. As with the first book, I think she could have gone into much more depth in many respects and the story would be a richer, more compelling experience. It isn’t because it’s hard to understand or because we don’t get to know the characters enough. It’s because she’d done such a good job of drawing a compelling picture it would be wonderful to get lost in her world and her characters lives.
I thought the climax showed off Kyrian’s abilities and strength nicely, rounding out his character and giving him the backbone to be a good mate for Seth. I enjoyed the humour she interlaced throughout the book. This was definitely a fun, entertaining read.

A Pint Light by Devon Rhodes Publisher: Total-E-Bound Publishing Genre: Paranormal, Erotic Romance, GLBT, M/M
Copy Received from Publisher
Summary:
What’s a vampire to do when every day is the same old dull quest for blood? Head to Maui, of course. But before Valerian can hit the beach, he needs to get rid of the sultry mage seducing him in his sleep. She may have fooled his subconscious, but he doesn’t need a mate complicating his life. Imagine Val’s shock when he finds out she’s a he, yet still has the power to arouse him beyond anything he’d ever imagined.
Raine faints at the sight of blood and isn’t looking forward to being a vamp’s chew toy. Still, family duty calls, and Valerian turns out to be the hottest, and most powerful, male on two legs. Raine is crushed when the sexy vamp of his dreams runs from their rough play in horror. But his pride can’t stand in the way when Valerian accidently steals his magic along with his blood.
Now, with time running out, Raine needs to seduce him one last time to even up the score, and maybe this time, they’ll exchange more than blood and power. Magic is in the air, and sometimes love only needs a little nudge.
Sofi’s Review:
Short and sweaty. That’s about what this little book amounts to. Not complaining about that at all. Ms. Rhodes has created very enticing characters for this story. It’s no wonder they can’t keep their hands off one another. Val is a good, strong main character, and Raine is perfect to stand up to him. The secondary characters are nicely drawn, too, offering a good backdrop for the main characters. In the short amount of time she had to introduce and endear us to these guys, Ms. Rhodes did an incredible job. They each have their quirks and strengths and come across as unique and believable individuals. I’ll even buy the gay-for-you trope, given that magic is involved and I thought Val deserved someone strong enough to keep his life interesting.
The plot is pretty straight forward and easy to follow if one is willing to take things at face value and not ask why. The magic is never really explained and I think the author missed a terrific opportunity to tell a compelling tale with a lot of nail-biting tension when she chose to stuff this story into 40 pages. I could have spent a lot more time with these strong, vibrant characters in this almost-realised alternate reality. While this story is a complete tale, it still seemed to end before it really got off the ground.
I enjoyed the characters immensely and I thought the world building was very strong, however, I honestly think both could have been done more justice if Ms. Rhodes had spent more time developing the plot to its fullest potential. It felt almost as though the skimpily clad plot was an excuse to write the sex, and well written as it is, it isn’t enough to make the story memorable for me.
My Recommendation: This is an enjoyable, if regrettably short read, but still worth the time for the superbly realized characters.

A Subtle Breeze by Bailey Bradford Publisher: Total-E-Bound Publishing Genre: Erotic Paranormal, GLBT, M/M, Western/Cowboys Length: Novel
Review Copy Received from Publisher
Summary:
Book one in the Southern Spirits Series
Ezekiel Matthers and Brendon Shanahan are about to find out that sometimes all it takes is a subtle breeze to shift the winds of fate.
Ezekiel Matthers is a reclusive man, forcing himself into the exile of his ranch after a violent assault left him wounded. While the scars on the outside have faded, the damage inside is much harder to conquer. Zeke resigns himself to a solitary existence, aside from his sister Enessa and, of course, his mama’s occasional visits.
Brendon Shanahan has a very meddling cousin, Gloria, who is best buds with Enessa Matthers. When the two women convince Brendon that he should hook-up with the reclusive Zeke, a plan is hatched that sets a series of events into motion – with potentially deadly consequences.
Can Ezekiel conquer his fears and accept what Brendon is offering? Or will Brendon walk away, giving up on the love he has waited for? And will the visits from Zeke’s mama – deceased for four years now – help the two men find their way to each other?
Only time will tell, and that may be the one thing the lovers don’t have, because someone is out to destroy everything Zeke and Brendon hold dear – and this time, the bad guy just might succeed.
Sofi’s Review:
I definitely enjoyed reading this book. While love at first sight has never been a trope I can really get behind, the gentle nudges by Zeke’s mother, in the form of a barely-there breeze and scent, push the idea just far enough to let me accept it. It’s comforting to think those whom we love in life might be watching over us from beyond as we muddle through.
The way Bradford has portrayed a strong but damaged Zeke touches a chord. He’s been mistreated, and in turn, has chosen to mistrust, and his pain, hidden behind the tough rancher exterior, is well treated by the author; powerful, but not melodramatic in any way.
Bradford hit the mark again with an equally strong partner for Zeke in Brendon. The man’s caring and bravery is a perfect match for Zeke’s loneliness and the fear he’s been saddled with.
The plot of this story is well crafted, each piece fitting snug and smooth into the last. While there are no really huge surprises, there is a lovely flow through the tale that kept me engaged right to the end.
I noticed a few of what I thought were awkward turns of phrase, but that’s probably the picky writer in me coming out. Sometimes it’s really hard to turn off the internal editor.
What surprised me was how soon I found myself just a few pages from the end of the story. This was definitely a smooth, quick read with lots of emotion, action and tones of very passionate sex scenes. There was certainly no lack of affection between the men. Being that this is romance, I suppose I can put aside the practicalities and refrain from asking how the hell they ever got any work done!
Following along with the book’s title, the injection of the helping ‘spirit’ was a nice touch; never too overshadowing. Tinged with the humour that accompanied the device, I found it the perfect addition to what might otherwise have been a slightly unbelievable story. Yes. I did just say the ghost’s presence made the story more believable. I would not have imagined two people could have overcome Zeke’s barriers without that help. If they hadn’t, there would be no story, and if they had, they would be so emotionally mature and intelligent the story wouldn’t have been interesting. As it is, they are just ordinary guys needing the help of an extra ordinary hand.
My Recommendation: This is another one of what I call ‘bathtub books’; goes perfect with a long, hot soapy soak and a nice glass of wine.
