Summary:

He gave up his soul for a second chance to love her…

Two and a half centuries ago, Calisto Terana lost everything when a zealous priest murdered the woman he loved. Now, desperate for another chance to love her, he wants redemption for the mistake that cost her life.

She’s haunted by dreams of her own death…

After catching her fiance with another woman, Kate Bradley returns to San Diego to clear her head. The last thing she needs is romance, but after meeting Calisto she’s drawn to him in ways she doesn’t understand.

They’ve waited in the shadows for centuries…

Calisto has no doubt Kate is the reincarnation of his lost love, but the Fraternidad Del Fuego Santo has a new watcher with dark ambitions of his own. As old enemies re-emerge and a new threat arises, the betrayal that enslaved Calisto to the night might destroy the only woman he’s ever loved again.

AJ’s Review:

Lisa Kessler is a new author to me, but her world building skills are exemplary, her characters are three-dimensional and the plot is well-developed as she quickly draws you into the lives of Calisto and Kate in Night Walker, the first book in The Night Series.

Kate is intelligent, beautiful, talented, and kind-hearted, but when she discovers that her louse of a fiance is cheating on her, she has no problem kicking him to the curb and in my opinion, good riddance. I love lost souls/destined to be together tropes and Ms. Kessler pens it with finesse and ingenuity. Kate isn’t quite sure why she’s so drawn to Calisto, but it’s obvious that these two have a connection. Although she’s been hurt in the past, her feelings are so strong that she didn’t even question her instant attraction to Calisto. While some my find this strange, I believe that souls have the ability to recognize one another and when you add that to a little faith, anything is possible, especially in a romance novel. :)

Calisto has been searching for the love of his life for centuries. This handsome, dark, charismatic man will swoop you offer your feet from page one. You can’t help but root for him and Kate to find their Happily Ever After. He knows that Tala’s soul resides in Kate and this is his last chance to be with the one his heart desires. But will the demons from his past prevent Calisto and Kate from finding their Happily Ever After? Guess you’ll have to read this riveting story to find out. :)

The secondary characters, specifically Edie and Lori, are invaluable, supportive friends who help Kate navigate through the landmines that have become her life. While each approach the situation somewhat differently – Edie being the more supportive one and Lori being the more judgmental one – there is no doubt in the reader’s mind that this dynamic trio genuinely care about one another. I loved their interaction, which made the story spring to life. Ms. Kessler is a master at transitioning between the present and the past in order to provide the reader with more background information regarding Calisto and Kate’s history together as soul mates, which is a testament to her writing ability. As the story unfolds, the reader will immediately become enthralled not only in the plot, but also in the magnificent world that Ms. Kessler has built for Calisto. The old age conflict regarding love and religion is an additional twist that increases the complexity of the plot, provides an additional dimension to each character, and made the story more realistic.

However, I must warn you to have a hanky near by because the raw, uninhibited emotions that flow back and forth between Calisto and Kate will definitely bring a tear to your eye. I’m not usually a big sci-fi fan, but I do love paranormal books and in my opinion, Ms. Kessler has manage to craft a story that encompasses the perfect balance between paranormal romance, fantasy, and sci-fi as Kate and Calisto fight against time and the demons from their past to reunite their souls as one. Just the thought of such an amazing plight makes me swoon with envy and admiration.

Night Walker is an entertaining read that will take you through a myriad of emotions that range from joy, to sorrow, to everlasting love. The characters are mature, the dialogue is fresh and witty, the conflict is captivating but for the common Joe would have been stifling, the hope and faith is unwavering, and the love is so endearing that it will make your heart swell with pride and joy as this magnificent couple fight for the Happily Ever After that they so rightfully deserve. I loved the fast-paced action of the story, but more importantly, I love the additional twist that Ms. Kessler threw in at the end of the book. I can’t wait to see what she has in store for us in the next installment of The Night Series. I highly recommend that you checkout Night Walker by Lissa Kessler because she’s found a new fan in this reviewer. Bravo! :) Ms. Kessler, you’ve hit a home run with your new series.

Author Review: Mack Dunstan’s Inferno by Paul Collins

Mack Dunstan’s Inferno by Paul Collins
Publisher: iUniverse Publishing
Genre: Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Adventure
Length: 148 pages

Summary:

Mack ‘Max’ Dunstan has played Moses, Marc Anthony, Ben-Hur, President Andrew Jackson, and Long John Silver. He has starred in The Ten Commandments, Ben-Hur, El Cid, 55 Days in Peking, Planet of the Apes, Omega Man, and Soylent Green, to name a few. Sadly, in this age of social media, reality television, and political correctness, today’s generation know him only for his hard right point of views and his outspoken nature.

Mack Dunstan’s Inferno was written as a satirical, fantasy work, where Mr. Dunstan succumbed to Alzheimer’s, went through the death process, and descended into hell, where he met victims of his pro-gun policy.

Collins was a fan of Mack Dunstan. This manuscript was actually inspired when the author viewed Michael Moore, who challenged Mr. Dunstan in Bowling for Columbine. The author did not support Mr. Moore’s penchant for skewing the facts, or promoting his own agenda, but has acknowledged the filmmaker for providing the inspiration for Mack Dunstan’s Inferno. Collins was never a fan of filmmaker Michael Moore. In fact he was utterly appalled and disgusted to hear how Mr. Moore accepted the academy award. The American Academy awards were about Gucci shoes, who was wearing what, and who’s sleeping with whom. It was never about social issues.

Collins never understood how a movie director could become infamous through documentary filmmaking. Only in America! Mack Dunstan’s Inferno began with Mack Dunstan going through and experiencing the death process. As he journeyed, he met Virgil, who guided him through hell, heaven, and eventual illumination. In his journey, Mr. Dunstan met the many victims of his pro-gun policy. Many were Hispanic and African-Americans, all of whom were from the poorer classes. It was in this scenario of the underworld; Mr. Dunstan was confronted with the many sad and tragic stories, leaving him to go through the process of expurgation of guilt, anger.

Dark Star’s Review:

Wow! The blurb pretty much covers the jest of the book, so this review will be quick and dirty. The use of deceased and living celebrities and public figures to argue the morality of anti or pro-gun theories throughout history while using Dante’s Inferno as the foundation was extraordinary.

My only niggle is that there were times that the story dragged as Dunstan traveled with Virgil; dead souls continued to pop up explaining how their death was related to guns; Dunstan would cringe and then the mantra would repeat itself. While the deceased souls were interesting, there was a point where the story became a little bogged down. In addition, the editing could have been better, especially in regards to the use of similar words like “presents” being replaced for “presence”. Yet it wasn’t enough to distract from the story.

Overall, I loved the tone of Mack Dunstan’s Inferno and thought Paul Collins did an excellent job of creating a satirical fantasy world that will definitely keep the reader engrossed until the end. As stated previously, Mr. Collins use of living celebrities and public figures to argue the morality of anti- or pro-gun theories was ingenious.

Author Review: Riding the Rocket by Sharita R Lira

Riding the Rocket by Sharita R Lira
Publisher: Sizzler Edition
Genre: GLBT, M/M, Sci-Fi, Erotic Romance
Length: 179 pages

Summary:

In this collection of futuristic erotic romances with a gay male spin that will warm your heart and arouse your mind and libido, love truly knows no boundaries. Science Fiction is tricky. Throw lust in the mix and it becomes trickier. Add in budding strictly male love affairs and the narrative begins to defy gravity: the conventional sentiment that romance is purely for the heterosexual. Impressed by Maura Anderson takes Hawaii from its days as a sailing hub to a seedy airship port full of opium dens, illicit pleasure clubs and press gangs that can be bribed to impress just the right man — for a price.

In Omakine by Ralph Greco, love, or at least lust, can happen between two species…as well as can prejudice. Michael Mandrake’s story Longing for a Normal State of Vertigo – One man’s quest to find love ends up being a heavenly experience. The Universal Language by Kiernan Kelly details how Mishau’s life is spent battling nature and struggling for survival, while Kurt’s world is far more technologically advanced, but when circumstances throw two very different men together, they quickly realize that lust is a language understood by everyone. The Test by Sascha Illyvich has one lover regretting what he did wrong with his life until he’s seduced by someone very special. Plus these stories by these fine writers: BAD PLACE by Cecilia Tan, FOSTER’S RACE by Darla M. Sands, EQUIVALENT EXCHANGE by Charity Thornton, DESERT FOXES LIVE IN CONCERT, by Tanya Janke, LONGING FOR A NORMAL STATE OF VERTIGO by Michael Mandrake, A BERTH ON CALISTA by Sebastian Blade, MIND GAMES by TJ Golden, SKY by Leigh WilderRiding the Rocket is an anthology that overflows with talent, showcasing well written hot, erotic male-male love stories with a science fictional spin, that push boundaries and define them in gay voices, the voices of the future.

Tamara’s Review:

This book was a difficult book for me to read and review. While I liked something about everything in Riding the Rocket, I found the stories to be, shall we say “oddities”. Now don’t get me wrong, this book had it’s moments and the writing was very well edited, but from a personal stand point, I found some of the stories more disturbing than entertaining. With that being said, I do want to hit on the highlights of the book…the ones which I thoroughly enjoyed.

First of all, I love the science-fiction genre this book contains. It’s not just limited to one world, but had me hopping across the galaxy and even species. While not all of these books aroused my passions, I will say that a great deal of them did. In Omakine, a short by Ralph Greco it was the moral of the story that got me. It reminded me of how a person always thinks they are entitled to their wants and how as a human, we will blather on and try to make things to our benefit when in all actuality things may not be what they seem.

I also thoroughly enjoyed the shifter story, Equivalent Exchange by Charity Thornton. The emotion – even the fear she portrays in the hero of her story is very heartfelt. For such a short story, it seems to be the one which sticks out primarily in my mind because of the emotional roller coaster this author sends you on, in such a few brief pages.

Overall Riding the Rocket isn’t a bad book, and if you’re looking for something that will be a bit different but still have sizzling m/m sex in it, I suggest you try this out. You may find a new author or two which you enjoy.

Author Review: Manbot by Scarlet Blackwell

Manbot by Scarlet Blackwell
Publisher: Silver Publishing
Genre: GLBT, M/M, Sci-Fi, Erotic Romance
Length: 135 pages

Summary:

Every home in the US now owns a housebot. The robots have revolutionised modern society, but were they made to fulfil all human desires?

When his friend, Mitchell, expresses sexual interest in his manbot, it sets Gray Benedict to thinking about his own hotbot, Kavan, a six foot three powerhouse made to obey Gray’s every command. Gray doesn’t want to take advantage of a machine, but when Kavan makes it clear he’s happy to serve his owner in every possible way, what’s a man supposed to do?

CONTENT ADVISORY: This titles has a HFN ending.

Tamara’s Review:

Ms. Blackwell’s latest release, Manbot is a fast little read that has one helluva a punch. I was quickly drawn into Gray’s world with his manbot, Kavan. Ms. Blackwell has created a very emotional plot as the most likely of circumstances happen when a human falls for his robot. While the sex is steaming in this book, I will have to say the emotional uphevel that Gray encounters as he tries to accept his own needs for the forbidden is more fascinating. And if that wasn’t enough to keep my interest, this author has to throw in outside issues that only adds to Gray’s turmoil.

Ms. Blackwell has built a very strong character in Gray and I thoroughly enjoyed his journey from the beginning stages of his relationship to his final acceptance of it. I won’t give away Ms. Blackwell’s plot, but I will tell you that this little novella is well worth the read, especially if you love a dash of sci-fi with your m/m stories.

Finally securing her place among twelve selected faeries, she landed on Earth with a plan, to find the three men that needed her intervention between all hallowed eve and the winter solstice or be doomed to serve a life of servitude. The one perk? She could find her one true love and choose to live her life as a mortal.

Sandy Ruger was a damaged soul. Guilt led him to a life of solitude and he was ready to end it. If not for his beloved golden retriever, he would be dead by his own hands. Meeting Cinta for the first time, he was enchanted. Little did he know he was one of the candidates in the magic dance. Her faith challenged, Cinta embarked on her mission and broke all the rules. Facing harsh punishment in both worlds, could she save Sandy before it was too late?

Naunet’s Review:

I have always loved Tinker Bell and wanted to be a faery. My childhood desire to be a faery stems from their fun, ability to fly, being mischievous, casting spells and going good for those in need.

After reading Shadowed Dreams and Magic, my understanding of why men gravitate to women wearing faery customs has been clarified. Faeries in Ms. Dayne’s Shadowed Dreams and Magic are sensuously adventurous beings with staggering elevated carnal nature.

Once I digested the scrumptious tale, Shadowed Dream and Magic, I allowed it to marinate for a while and the candy from back in the day called “Good and Plenty” came to me because it truly captures the essence of Shadowed Dreams and Magic. Ms. Dayne accumulates all the facets of a narrative worthy of my time: good, bad, wicked and angelic, power, destruction, pain, joy and whimsical sexual energy. Wow!! This book has plenty of suspense, adventurous action, nail biting segments as well as freaky encounters that will surprise the reader. Shadowed Dreams and Magic flows and ebbs well with its intriguing characters, settings, rising action, plot, conflict and the resolution. All aspects of the narrative are realistic, especially the dialogue and the sense of humor, making it an easy read that clicked for me.

Ms. Dayne’s eye-popping Shadowed Dreams and Magic explodes with butt-kicker attention grabber. I felt some of that effervescent a young child gets riding on a carousel twirling about making them giddy. I seized that feeling traveling on Ms. Dayne’s star ship of dreams. She hits you in the middle of the Prefrontal Pleasure Center of your brain implementing her writing skills that possesses a bewitching style; skills well honed for keeping readers fixated. Ms Dayne has a outstanding sense of humor and sprinkles it throughout the story. Shadowed Dreams and Magic, a paranormal erotic adventure, is for readers with vivid imaginations and a free-spirited nature. Therefore, conservative, inhibited, vanilla flavored fantasy romance readers may find Shadowed Dreams and Magic hard to swallow.

Shadowed Dreams and Magic centers around a faery princess, Cinta Heart, and her pursuit to travel to Earth as a Dream Emissary before the Festival of Broken Hearts. Cinta is a feisty, sexy, bodacious, beautiful creature who is determined to have an earthly experience before she marries. Cinta Heart is the lead personality in this fantasy. Dashan Heart, Cinta’s father, is a godlike ruler of the Faerie Kingdom who’s powerful and stern but lovingly fights her idea tooth and nail. He is the immortal Dream Maker and refuses to permit his princess Cinta to trek to Earth to intercede for adult men suffering from devastatingly broken hearts. Most faeries of this galaxy have experienced this dream restoration journey mending broken hearts before the Winter Solstice. Cinta craves this opportunity before marrying Skylar Blue an arranged bond to bring peace between the two kingdoms. Skylar loves Cinta but he lacks a sexually adventurous spirit. Cinta loves Skylar but feels the need to verify that he is truly her soulmate by going to Earth to investigate as a Dream Emissary. There are some perks to the task permitting faeries to explore human beings sensual practices of communicating on an intimate, passionate level while on Earth helping the downtrodden souls. Cinta views her lovemaking with Skylar as French Vanilla and she feels there has to be sizzling, adventurous, uninhibited intimate action occurring on Earth that she is missing out on with Skylar.

I really connected with Cinta because of her personality, energy, unpredictability and quick wit.

Nick is Cinta’s human earthly guide providing information about Miami, earthly ways and assists her in performing her magic to heal the three assigned men with shattered hearts. Nick is a sexy stallion and model with the perfect body for advertising form fitting attire. Nick’s height and handsome looks exude powerful lovemaking skills to satisfy any woman’s desires and he carries the perfect tools to get the job done. Nick captured my heart with his view of the world, his dedication in executing his responsibilities as a faery assistant and Cinta’s companion.

Sandy is the most heart broken of the characters who lost his beloved wife Anastasia four years ago in a awful car accident. He’s handsome, intelligent, owns his own company and has been deeply depressed since the accident.

Michael is average looking and a caring, hard worker but heartbroken as a result of his marriage disintegrating before his eyes and a divorce generated by his wife.

Sandy and Michael are close friends and are two of the three males specimens on Cinta’s assignment list needing magical love intervention.

Ms. Dayne’s articulation of the eroticism within this novel is blistering and easy for any reader to visualize and get caught up in every nuance of the lovemaking process and the suspense. I found several segments unusual in Shadowed Dreams and Magic, such as the depth and length of the lovemaking sessions. Hmmm, these characters had to be sated after each interlude. The sultry and sometime savage nature ravaging of each other may push the reader into a frenzy with the mind-blowing portrayals. Yummy!!

One of the many sensual interludes accelerated my heart rate, boosted my adrenaline and run for a cool drink. Thanks to Ms. Dayne’s crafty writing skills, I believe I had heart palpitations. Her talent of tapping into pleasure sensors which entails picturing and hearing the explosive activities from the entrance into the bedroom, to the hastily removal of the clothes as buttons popped, clothes dropped to the floor and the passion uttered between partners is off the chain.

Please, I don’t want you to think that Shadows Dreams and Magic is a cheap thrill lacking substance because it’s not. Instead, it’s packed with real life elements and endearing characters along with the beauty of fantasy that’s pertinent to the story. Trust and believe that once you start this novel, there must be some critical situation taking place to interrupt your devouring of this combustible, erotic, suspenseful paranormal romance.

I have read several books penned by Ms. Dayne; however, I cannot remember one of them starting out with such serious butt kicking, saucy, provocative, erotic action as exhibited in Shadowed Dreams and Magic. If you are a lusty puppy this is The One!

Cowboy: They seemed like ordinary women in the greasy spoon in town, but they had plans for Jack Barnes and his equipment.

Rosa Erotica: Lyrical and touching. A 500-word ode to the spirit of the rose goddess and a warrior’s epiphany.

Lace’s Review:

Chainsaw Chicks of Chinese Camp

Chainsaw Chicks of a Chinese Camp had me laughing so hard from the “Deliverance Theme” incorporated into the story. What do you get when you take 4 Amazon women with the taste for both men and women along with off the wall ideas in the bedroom department? One whacked out, quirky story full of laughter.

Zap

Zap is one science project gone a rye. The program meant for helping with epilepsy turns into one erotic ride, for men that is. Veronica and Josie create an app by accident that will have the male population scream in lust.

Take Me to Your Leader

In Take Me to Your Leader, Ruby Fletcher is the government’s “It” girl, but even the “it” girl can be shocked. All I can say is the Alien’s have it going on. Talk about your hands on job. LOL!

The Gnome World Order

All I can say about The Gnome World Order is that it’s what’s under the hat that counts. Watch out for the Alien Gnome take over.

Little Shoppe of Enchantments

Little Shoppe of Enchantments is a story for anyone who thinks everlasting is a good thing. Well, poor Augustus found out that’s not always true.

Cowboy

Jack might be up for a sexy ride, but even a stud like him was not ready for what he found in his bed partners. It was truly out of this world.

Rosa Erotica

Rosa Erotica is a different type of story when compared to the others. A Warrior comes back from war to cleanse himself in a special rose garden that holds unbelievable erotic powers.

Overall, W.J Craft has created a unique read that I have to admit had me scratching my head asking myself why? I’ve always been one who could enjoy reading a good book, but I must admit that this one threw me for a loop.  Despite the quirks incorporated into the plots, these stories had me laughing at times, as well as providing plenty of WTH moments. Although W.J Craft’s quirkiness might be enjoyed by most, I feel it was not my cup of tea after all is said and done. There just is not enough strength in the pages of this book for me to give it anything higher than a three rating.

Author Review: Grown Men by Damon Suede

Grown Men by Damon Suede
Publisher: Riptide Publishing
Genre: GLBT, M/M, Sci-Fi
Length: 109 pages

Summary:

HardCell Universe: First Transmission)

Every future has dirty roots.

Marooned in the galactic backwaters of the HardCell company, colonist Runt struggles to eke out an existence on a newly-terraformed tropical planetoid. Since his clone-wife died on entry, he’s been doing the work of two on his failing protein farm. Overworked and undersized, Runt’s dwindling hope of earning corporate citizenship has turned to fear of violent “retirement.”

When an overdue crate of provisions crashes on his beach, Runt searches frantically for a replacement wife among the tools and food. Instead he gets Ox, a mute hulk who seems more like a corporate assassin than a simple offworld farmer.

Shackwacky and near-starving, Runt has no choice but to work with his silent partner despite his mounting paranoia and the unsettling appeal of Ox’s genetically altered pheromones. Ox plays the part of the gentle giant well, but Runt’s still not convinced he hasn’t arrived with murder in mind.

Between brutal desire and the seeds of a relationship, Runt’s fears and Ox’s inhuman past collide on a fertile world where hope and love just might have room to grow.

Layne’s Review :

Damon Suede gives us vivid, descriptive images and a uniquely fascinating new world in Grown Men.

Through Runt, the narrator of Grown Men, we’re taken on an extraordinary journey as two strangers learn to trust each other and work together to build a life and ultimately a relationship.

Isolated on a far-off planet, the small of stature Runt has been waiting for a new shipment to come in from his ‘bosses’, the corporation he’s indentured to. Along with the food and supplies in the dropped crates, Runt finds the huge…Ox. Naturally, Runt thinks the silent Ox has been sent to kill him. He’s cautious and on alert, but soon figures out Ox is anything but violent.

Damon Suede crafts an engrossing tale and the characters coupled with the world they inhabit kept me reading. The buildup in trust and camaraderie took a while between Runt and Ox, as well it should, but even as Runt kept a distrustful eye on Ox, he’s swamped by the giant man’s pheromones. So poor Runt suffers in silence and snatches solo time where he can to deal with his attraction to the mute Ox.

I liked Grown Men, appreciated the slow build in tension that grew to much more between Runt and Ox. The sex is practically non-existent, but it works well to show the growth of the characters.

When an assassination attempt is made on Jayce, Izzie and Damian work together to uncover a plot that will shake the prince’s faith in his homeland. Can the love the three of them share help Jayce find a way to fulfill his royal destiny?

A Siren Erotic Romance

Lace’s Review:

Captivated by Elizabeth Raineswas an intriguing read with a fast pace plotline that held a lot of suspense. In addition, these three characters sure know how to heat up the pages. Between Jayce, Izzie and Damian someone was always getting “wet”. *vbg*

I will say as I read Captivated, I was not quite sure what role Izzie played in the grand scheme of things and the relationship. In my opinion, Jayce and Damain’s passion for one another, as well as their connection, was so strong they could have carried this book themselves. Izzie just added a different spin.

Izzie was dropped into a world where men ran everything. Being an independent out spoken woman, how will she survive in this man’s world? Damian and Jayce carry on behind closed doors because of the beliefs of the royal family that it is wrong to openly love one another.

The story lay-out was interesting, but in truth I did not feel that this was truly a Sci-Fi story. Had it not been for the hovercrafts and the word Earthling, I would have considered Capitivated more of a contemporary genre. To me the setting resembled more of a Middle-East country in regards to their beliefs about women.

All in all, Captivated by Elizabeth Raines was well worth reading. Give it a try!

He’s certain that Cistalan Konrád is involved, but his attraction to the other man puts himself and the entire investigation in danger.

Naunet’s Review:

Weight of the Gun an Anthology

The power of steel in the right hands can be authoritarian in multiple ways which the author Cornelia Grey relates in her story, The Bounty Hunter, that leads the anthology The Weight of the Gun.

In the first story in the Weight of the Gun anthology Ms. Grey introduces us to William Hunt the powerful bounty hunter who is on the trail of James Campbell, a man that stirs up an unrelenting force that fuels William’s pursuit. The action builds quickly as William closes in on the trail of the deceptive man hiding in the shadows with a string of crimes.

James is a character that is portrayed as a typical wild western outlaw. He is handsome in a rugged, “bad boy” way that attracts both women and men. James also has the gift of deception, but a mighty presence if he desires a lover like no other. William Hunt has his sights locked in on the whereabouts of James, the infamous criminal. William is also a strong-willed man with a body that has the sexy rawness necessary to pack heavy steel and is not afraid to use it.

Ms. Grey’s settings vividly illustrates the places commonly associated with the old-fashioned cowboy movies: dusty, unbearable heat, tumble weeds and dark, poorly maintained saloons and hotels. I felt the tension throughout this thrilling trek that kept me actively engaged as the character galloped off into many sunsets. There are frustrations as William closed in on the sought after man and then suddenly the gears are shifted.

Guns pack quite a wallop making the results memorable in every sense of the word. All aspects of your imagination makes handling heavy steel/ gun take on an array of meanings. The gun can be utilized as a weapon in all parts of your imagination. Used for protection/ punishment, the object of steel could mean the keenly horned muscular appendage of the male human anatomy.

James gets a taste of all of the above in his game of hide and seek, come get it that encompasses various towns, people and situations. The relationship between James and William’s explosive personalities holds a past that only William and James have in common. I anticipated the ending or so I thought but Ms. Grey throws in a bit of unexpected scenes which threw me off slightly and the ending left me looking forward to her next book involving the antics of William and James.

Changing the Guard by Peter Hansen

In this exciting story Changing the Guard, Mr. Hansen tosses you into the worlds of outer space a futurist tale on another dark planet. His characters are witty and I became caught up in the relationship and the banter between Tomi and Andile. Mr. Hansen incorporates skillfully the current social issues plaguing us today and that these concerns are still present far into the future.

Mr. Hansen wastes no time “getting the party started” with his descriptions of the outer space setting, the sights, and sounds as he acquaints his reader to the sexy lead players. The characters were easy to relate to and enjoy. Mr. Hansen presents the emotions of whether you should trust someone you don’t know or keep your guard up and try to find holes in their story. The use and consistent presence of the gun is important to the development of the story along with the personal tempered steel Andile possess.

Mr. Hansen allows his readers to become a bit anxious about the connection between Tomi and Andile. I also liked the manner in which Mr. Hansen brings these two men together and his descriptions of the physical attributes of Tomi and Andile. This made my imagination rock and roll. Mr. Hansen brings the reader on his outer space, sexy thriller that left me wondering whether or not they should take the risk, fulfill each other and deal with the impact of their actions. The Changing the Guard has the necessary conflict and near closure that makes me hungry for more of the story. “Remember when you pull your gun out of the holster you have to use it properly”. :-) )

The Machinist by Gryvon

The next story in this gun toting anthology continues the connection of being the bearer of the scorching heat and power of the individual holding the tool in their hands. In The Machinist by Gryvon, you are thrown head first into a prisoner’s cell and the sounds of gunshots being fired.

The Machinist informed me that guns have different sounds, hmmm now that I think about it he is so on point with that fact.

Life was horrific on thecolony run by barbarians who did not respect machinists. Harrow and his team break into the prison that housed Avery, a machinist, and frees him so that he can be used for the personal desires of Harrow, which involves lots of kinky sex.

In The Machinist, the gun battles are ever present with a monster that eats the bodies that were remnants of the gun battle. Everything in the beginning of The Machinist is dark, gloomy, violent and hard. Ms. Gryvon directs the readers attentions to their auditory senses and the sense of smell. The machinist, Avery, appears to have several useful skills that saves Harrow and himself. Harrow and his soldier moved to the living quarters owned by Harrow which appeared to be a castle. Here Ms. Gryvon opens up the tale to light and the darkness fades into the background momentarily. Harrow makes Avery his personal machinist.

I would have liked a bit more of a lead into the story with some background knowledge about Avery, the colony, and the monster. I felt a bit disconnected as the story progressed; however, the kinky sex is very explicit.

My Rifle is Human by Sumi

Wow! Ms. Sumi comes out the gate with an explicit intimate scenario. What an attention getter.

Fil and Jeryl are engaged in a sexy situation. Their conversations are often funny yet sarcastic. Fil has been in the army providing twenty years of service. Gunslingers as they were called were committed to serving two tours as payment for their education. Ordnances are warriors who depend on the skills of Gunslingers to strengthen them prior to going into battle. The Ordnance are shape-shifters and can change arms and fingers into weaponry. Ordnances report for battle once they get the”mark” on their body then they must report to the War Office.

In this fantasy, the Ordnances are individuals who go to the battlefields and the Gunslinger serves as an energy source. Ms. Sumi shares a conversation between Morris, a main character who appears on the scene a bit deeper into the story. In doing this Ms Sumi creates a different dimensions giving her writing a uniqueness that I enjoyed. My Rifle is a Human has a lighter energy than most of the stories in this anthology, which was a welcomed change. There are a few moments in Ms. Sumi’s book that made me chuckle as I picture the scene because of the realism, but more importantly I admired Morris’ train of thought prior to heading out to the battle. My Rifle is a Human has plenty of sizzling sexual vibes of all kinds and hidden emotions that reveal compassion and friendships.

Morris is accepted for duty and finds that he’s quite a bit older than most soldiers. Morris has a different idea for Fil’s servicing duties. Morris is fresh from the Academy and Fil’s finds Morris amazing and unlike any Ordnances Fil has prepared for battle.  Well done Ms. Sumi!!

In the Pines by Lydia Nyx

Alaska is a truly beautiful setting for the story of mystery and intrigue. Tyler Maxwell an injured police officer from New York is assigned to restricted duty where boredom begins to take hold, so he moves to Anchorage Alaska. Tyler was great at profiling people because it was second nature for him. The clerk at a gun shop chats with Tyler as the clerk knows that Tyler is new to the area and did not recognize Tyler. The clerk’s impression of the reason Tyler moved to Alaska was for police duties with a slower pace. Tyler browses the store’s gun inventory and a Browning catches his eye. Tyler would like to purchase the gun as a gift for his brother Rich.

Ms. Nyx creates the cool air of mystery as she develops the plot that takes you on a wild ride of paranormal activities surrounding the gun. Tyler’s obsession creates the twists and turns after a series of dreams.Tyler was gay and fancies the younger, wilder set for his erotic encounters.

Tyler has a sensual encounter with one of the sexiest beings he has ever met. The dream was so influential that Tyler returns to work happy, smiling and easier to be around.

Ms. Nyx’s implementation of the setting and plot combined plenty of unpredictable events that conjures all kinds of stimulating and titillating reactions. She clearly shares the experiences Tyler is graced with in his dreams. Flynn and Tyler’s intimate encounters are more than incredible and extremely realistic to those who dream and can remember them. Dreams have the power to alter us with their messages.

There were moments that required my reflex to fan my face as I read because things really sizzled. The man/angel of Tyler’s dream was supernal and this drives him to the point of acting irrationally.

Ms. Nyx weaves a sexy thriller that is so intoxicating that I often sat with my eyes bugging out of my head and gasping for air after holding my breath in anticipation of the next event. Ms. Nyx’s vivid descriptions caused me to become so engrossed in the books, I felt as if I were in the scene with Tyler during his hot pursuit of clues that impact his dreams of Flynn. Ms. Nyx manages to not only create a wonderfully erotic story that is top-notch in every aspect, but also creates a combination that blends the thriller genre that takes you by surprise. I will look for other writings  by Ms. Nyx who is outstanding at captivating the reader and holding he/she down in the chair with the energy that’s almost as powerful as Flynn’s affect on Tyler. Ms. Nyx gives new meaning to nocturnal emission…inconceivable!  Great ending!  This is a book I will remember for a long time.

Compromised Judgment by Penny K. Moss

Weapons are being confiscated for illegal purposes.

Rozsa Ignac wants to conduct his personal investigation into the shipment of guns. Cistalan Konrad is almost willing to compromise his investigation to develop a relationship with Rozsa Ignac.

Konrad was a man with swagger, captivating personality and a sexy air about him. The vibes between them is strong and the need to follow their instincts go against all of the training they’ve received.

Ignac felt taunted by Konrad’s heat and presence. Was his desire for him worth missing the opportunity to catch Tarr Ador with the unmarked weapons?

Ms. Moss has a great descriptions of the environment for her characters. The two main characters are realistic with a lot of tension between them both intimately and on the job, but I found it often difficult to relate to the stiff vibe of the characters. She makes a strong impression about how loyalty and a sense of honor is so very important and may result in denying your needs. That message was powerful and appreciated. The use of the pistols popping up as natural reflex was a bit unsettling for me. I noticed the sexual implications present with all the oiling and disassembling and reassembling the weapons as an invitation to engage in some type of sex play.

Conclusion

The Weight of the Gun is a collection of hot, erotica with the power of using tempered steel in and out of the sheath. The authors are all very talented and incorporates plenty of sensual energy among all GLBT genre. These ladies have plenty of knowledge of guns and the multiple methods for usage.

The person with the big gun and mad skills wielding it clearly determines that things are going to be scorching hot. If you can’t take the heat, get out of the kitchen. I relished the stories some a bit more than others. I recommend it and have a deeper respect for the power, hardness and various temperatures of guns and their ability to govern so many human aspects of intimacies. (wink)

Author Review: Intentional Abduction by Eve Langlais

Intentional Abduction by Eve Langlais
Series: Alien Abduction, Book 2
Publisher: Self-Published
Genre: Sci-Fi/Fantasy, Erotica, Romantic Comedy
Length: 37,000 words

Summary:

She intentionally abducted him because of his prowess, so, when the chance arose, he stole her for revenge–and to relieve his lust.

Aylia is on a quest to get pregnant, and in the time-honored tradition of her people, she must kidnap a suitable male for the task. Seducing a reluctant warrior is harder than she expected, especially when her body turns traitor and melts at his touch. When he flips the situation around and takes her prisoner, he doesn’t just steal her body, he also takes her heart. And she might just have to kill him to get it back.

Being the scourge of the galaxy comes with consequences, like women wanting his body, but Jaro’s never had someone kidnap him for his seed. Fighting the female’s allure, the captive becomes the captor, and he learns that not all battles are fought using fists and knives. Although, the sword between his legs gives her its best shot.

Through the vastness of space, brothels and unmentionable places in between, can this stubborn pair overlook their pride and past to come together? Or will they forever abduct and pleasurably torture each other?

Warning: The female in this piece does kidnap a male and force him into having mindblowing sex. But don’t worry, he ends up abducting her back and getting his revenge. This is a sci-fi romance, heavy on the romance, with adult situations that some readers may find offensive. Reader discretion and a dose of open mindedness is suggested. No alien probes were used in the making of this story.

Each book in the Alien Abduction series can be read as a stand alone but for total reader enjoyment, it is recommended you read them in order.
Book One – Accidental Abduction
Book Two – Intentional Abduction
Book Three – Dual Abduction – Coming 2012

Naunet’s Review:

Brace yourself for the most amazing erotic space ride imaginable in Eve Langlais’ Intentional Abduction. The story is one of the most erotic stories I have read in a while. Intentional Abduction is a raging-hot interracial, futuristic, erotic romance that takes place in the galaxy on Zonia. Aylia, the main character grows up on this asteroid where women reign supreme, smarter, stronger, larger and more dominate than the males who are weak and unacceptable for reproduction. According to Zonian standards Zonian female warriors must search other civilizations for suitable specimens to shire their females babies.
When a Zonian female warrior has completed her rights of passage and deemed a formidable warrior she is then released to search the galaxy for powerful male warrior with similar talents to shire a female child. Aylia a curveous, petite, warrior of rare beauty has been released by her teacher, Pantariste to find a strong suitable warrior-mate for procreation. Aylia lands on a asteriod where she watches a contest featuring a male warrior fighting huge creatures in cages for entertainment. Jaro fights with the grace of acrobatics of Cirque Du Soleil. Jaro defeats the beast and excites all of the females in the audience.

Aylia observes this beautiful manly specimen; the biggest, most powerful fighter after he demolishes the horrific creature and immediately knows she must abduct this male for his seed.

The characters Jaro and Aylia have similar personalities, fighting skills and body strength making them well suited for each other. The abduction of Jaro is a success although he is much larger and heavier than other males Aylia has encountered from other asteroids. Usually a Zonian females can throw a male abductee over their shoulder and carry them like a firefighter. The seductress Aylia enslaves Jaro with the help of drugs because his muscular body structure is far greater than she realized.

Ms Langlais creates characters in Intentional Abduction who possess realistic aspects in their personalities, desires, needs and they are terrific. Her imaginative male characters on this asteroid will make your toes curl. Picturing Jaro as a gigantic, purplish, muscular, finely chisel body from head to toe, with the mask of mystery and cape made me weak in the knees. I loved the stimuli. Jaro and his cousins Brax and Xarnx have fierce reputations throughout the galaxy as mercenary, assassins, warriors that caused others to fear and respect them.

Aylia is the Zonian warrior princess features make her stand out from other Zonian women and those of other civilizations. In fact, she is often classified or referred to as a humanoid from the barbarian planet Earth. Aylia skin is very pale – white, red headed, voluptuous along with other human body features. All of the other characters in the story are of various colors and hues: blue, mauve, purple, grey tones and have other unusual body features.

Intentional Abduction is a tantalizing tale of adventurous romance that ignites all of your sensory receptors. Ms. Langalis made me feel every sensation from fighting battles to the sinfully, sexy bed chamber activities.

Intentional Abduction takes into right brain overload. Ms. Langlais descriptions of space ships, characters physical attributes, mannerisms, fight scenes and other actions are fantastic. I love the manner in which this author skillfully takes you on a sensual journey that ignited passion and a quest for nirvana. I would suggest reading this book with some mellow tunes playing softly, a glass of wine oh, and the main ingredient an adventurous partner.

This was an introduction to the author Eve Langlais because I tend not to shy away from futuristic genre but I will definitely read the first book of this series: Accidental Abduction.

When The Beast defends him from the guards, Raine finds himself inexplicably drawn to the misunderstood man. A man with unique abilities of his own, the Beast’s animalistic desires forms a connection between them that cannot be denied. When he learns The Beast comes from Outside the City, is Raine willing to take the chance on escape with the mysterious man?

Escape wont be easy, and there are dangers waiting for them on The Outside, ready to strike at the fragile relationship between the two men. When The Beast’s past come’s to light, will Raine be able to put aside his own fears in order to fight for the life the two of them could have together? Or will he fold under the pressure?

Will he get his happily ever after?

Or will he become just another victim of the Nature of the Beast.

Layne’s Review:

In an oppressed world of gray, where to be different is to be jailed, Raine dares to takes a chance and lands behind bars and into the arms of the beast. Nature of the Beast hooked me at the start with that premise, and Amylea Lyn did her best to deliver.

Raine’s life is dependant on plants. The very things considered contraband by the tyrannical rulers of the City. He’s unable to be without those plants, they need him and he them, so Raine ignores the dangers and grows them in his apartment. He’s soon found out and taken to jail. Behind bars he suffers many atrocities by the cruel guards then thrown to the beast to be killed.

I would’ve liked Ms. Lyn to go deeper into Raine’s abilities, explain why he has them, but she doesn’t. Raine is quite likeable, thumbing his nose to the Powers-That-Be and questioning their teachings, unlike the rest of the population who takes it all for gospel. He has a strength and resourcefulness about him that I really liked, and his suffering at the hands of the prison guards endeared him to me even more.

I expected a bit more when Raine is thrown into the beast’s cell, but that was downplayed as almost immediately the two men bonded. I noticed a few head hops, POV switches I felt was unnecessary: we really didn’t need to be in the prison doctor’s mind.

The relationship between the beast and Raine was great. Loved the chemistry. Didn’t really care for having to wait until Kingdom come for them to consummate their bond, but I enjoyed it. The first half of Nature of the Beast was great, filled with intense emotion and suspense, and Ms. Lyn did her best with the second half, but I couldn’t help feeling like I’d read it all before.

Author Review: The Balance of Silence by S. Reesa Herberth, Michelle Moore

The Balance of Silence by S. Reesa Herberth, Michelle Moore
Publisher: Samhain Publishing, Ltd
Genre: M/M, Sci-Fi, Futuristic
Length: Category

Summary:

Welcome to the jungle—where the found are lost and the lost are redeemed.

Riv is a man adrift, hoping that running supplies for ReliefCorp will restore his faith in mankind—and in himself. Deep in the war-torn Maltana rainforest, he stumbles upon a local bar that suits his mood: good food, bad attitude. The entertainment, though, is unexpected. A skilled piano player who avoids eye contact, flinches when anyone approaches…and warns Riv of an ambush by tapping out the planetary anthem for Riv’s homeworld of Karibee.

The least Riv can do for the mute piano man, “Ducks”, is take him to the nearest spaceport for help. On their harrowing journey to escape Maltana, Riv makes a horrifying discovery. Ducks endured torture that scarred his mind as well as his body. Still, before he leaves the man safely in a treatment facility, Riv manages to earn what little trust Ducks has to give.

Months later they reconnect, and while it’s clear their instant attraction was no fluke, there’s still a piece missing. Ducks’ voice. To help him find it again, Riv will have to expose the painful past that tore a hole in his own life. And hope that together, their ragged edges will fit together to form a whole.

Product Warnings: This book contains fluffy blond hair, sugary soda that will rot your teeth out, one unfortunate first name, and one mute amnesiac with a sarcasm fetish, all wrapped up in two selfless but mildly unstable guys who accidentally find their happily ever after. In SPACE!

Olivia’s Review:

The Balance of Silence by Ms. S. Reesa Herbert and Ms. Michelle Moore was a sweet novel about how healing love is.

After a mission that goes horribly wrong, pacifist Riv decides to volunteer to bring medical supplies to war-torn, outlying planets. On one such planet, he meets Ducks. Ducks is a man broken by the things he’s seen and experienced. He’s playing a piano in a hole in the wall bar on some backwater planet.

The relationship that develops between the two men is sweet. Ducks, damaged, does not talk. He barely communicates before Riv gets him to his own home planet to a psychiatric hospital. Dealing with Ducks’ psychiatric healing also helps Riv come to terms with things from him own past.

While I enjoyed the book and story, I found it hard to see when the two characters really fell in love with the information provided by Ms. Herbert and Ms. Moore. For one thing, the time the book takes place jumps around. One moment Riv is meeting Ducks, then the next chapter, it’s been a couple of months they’re doing the inter-galactic of Skyping, then it’s three weeks later and something else is going on. It was a very stop and go read.

Aside from that, I greatly enjoyed The Balance of Silence. The love that grows between Ducks and Riv is sweet and beautiful. Ms. Herbert and Ms. Moore created a very interesting world, with all different races of people, planets and organizations. Put this together with the cast of secondary characters that make up the rest of the story, and I would recommend this to anybody I knew looking for a fluffy bit of love.

Author Review: Accidental Abduction by Eve Langlais

Accidental Abduction by Eve Langlais
Publisher: Eve Langlais
Genre: Sci-Fi, Fantasy Romance
Word Count: 38,5000

Summary:

Abducted by a space pirate, she fights the temptation to let him plunder her goods.

A boyfriend’s attempted murder leaves Megan floundering in the ocean. Sinking without hope, the bright light she sees in the night sky isn’t her doorway to heaven, but rather the beginning of her accidental abduction by a space pirate. While thankful of his rescue, Megan stays true to form and just can’t keep her mouth shut, even when he keeps threatening to kill her–or auction her off to the highest bidder. Even odder, despite her decision to not get involved with her wickedly hot captor, she can’t help craving his touch.

Tren retired from his job as a mercenary so he could enjoy life, but he never counted on the boredom of normalcy. The acquisition of rare items has somewhat filled the void, but his accidental abduction of an outspoken earthling, who doesn’t know when to shut up, turns his life upside. Her fiery spirit draws him while at the same time drives him insane. Struggling with his urges, he must decide– throttle her barbarian neck or ravish her delectably lush body?

Despite what his heart tries to tell him, he’s determined to sell her to the highest bidder even as he seduces her body. However, despite his best intentions, he discovers he can’t let her go. And when a foe from his past thinks to steal her, he’ll do anything to get her back.

Olivia’s Review:

I absolutely loved Accidental Abduction by Ms. Eve Langlais. Her story was sweet and funny and sexy. Her characters are real and engaging. And the sparks between Megan and Tren practically burn the pages of… the screen of my Kindle!

Megan is an absolute, wonderfully hilarious character. She has her opinion, and she has no problem letting anybody know what that opinion is. She’s pissed off about a lot of things – most recently, almost being killed by her slimy boyfriend then being abducted by and alien – and she has no qualms about telling Tren about how pissed off she is. Speaking of Tren, he is such an awesome hero. He’s bored in retirement, exasperated by Megan, and 100% alpha male. He’s rough and more comfortable with a gun in his hand, and he’s just completely perfect for Megan.

I really enjoyed their sparring. Throughout the entire story, they were arguing and sniping at one another. I also liked the fact that Ms. Langlais actually created new species in outer space. Too many sci-fi romances have Earth girls being the center of lust for an alien who just happens to conveniently look, act, and sound human. It was refreshing to see Ms. Langlais use her imagination and create new words and worlds and peoples.

The sparks – and sarcasm! – flies across space in this awesome book, Accidental Abduction!

Author Review: Four Play by Shelli Stevens

Four Play by Shelli Stevens
Publisher: Samhain Publishing, Ltd
Genre: SciFi – Futuristic, Red Hots!!!, Ménage & More
Length: Novella

Summary:

Duty required she choose one life mate. Her heart wants all three.

Mikayla knew this day was coming. News has come down from the planetary elders—now that she’s twenty-five, the law requires she pick her lifemate. She may be the planetary secretary, but when it comes to trying out potential mates, she’s inexperienced and nervous.

She only needs one man with whom she can trust her life. Luckily she knows three—all friends since childhood. Even if they’re not thrilled to be her potential lifemate, it’s the only way she can get through this process.

Mikayla couldn’t be more wrong about Cedric, Kyle, and Brett. They’re eager, yet resentful about the situation. Each one would kill to claim her, but they’re not too happy about having to risk their friendship to win her love. Yet, one by one, they set out to do just that.

Mikayla is stunned to learn all three men drive her mad with desire—and make her feel cherished. Loved. Choosing one seems impossible, until the one man she doesn’t want forces her hand…

Product Warnings: This book contains one female being thoroughly tempted by three very different males—sometimes at the same time! It contains m/m and m/m/m/f scenes, rough lovin’, gentle lovin’, and all of the above lovin’.

Olivia’s Review:

Four Play by Shelli Stevens was a fast, fun, feisty read. The four central characters— Mikayla, Cedric, Kyle, and Brett— are great characters. I liked the characters and the story.

Upon further reflection, I finally decided what set me off this book was the writing of the story. It’s a good plot: it’s time for her to get married, by law, and she wants to choose a man from her three closest friends. To make things fair, she gives them each equal opportunity to woo her into deciding upon one of them. For me, it just seemed like everything flowed too well. It was predictable. It’s obvious that she’ll be more confused after each sojourn out for their courting hour. It’s obvious that there will be that one weasely guy that the three heroes will deal with. Ms. Stevens didn’t leave any guess-work for the reader.

I don’t want to sound like the book wasn’t good; it was. I just hope Ms. Stevens will perhaps leave something for the reader to figure out, or add a twist in her future works. Four Play was just too… neat. Otherwise, it was a fun, sexy read.

Author Review: Taydelaan by Rachel Clark

Taydelaan by Rachel Clark
Publisher: Siren-Bookstrand, Inc
Genre: Contemporary, Erotic, Sci-Fi, Ménage a Trois Romance, F/F/M
Word Count: 21,130

Summary:

Kayla has been hurt before so it feels very safe to secretly fall a little in love with her best friend and her best friend’s husband.

Jessica and David have a few secrets of their own, and the fact that they’ve both fallen in love with Kayla is probably the least shocking of them. They’ve been searching for their Taydelaan, or third, the one who completes them, but they found Kayla instead, and no matter how sensible it should be to walk away, neither Jessica nor David wants to. They love Kayla and are willing to alter their plans for the future just to stay with her.

But in an effort not to hurt the woman they love, they’ve left out a few essential details. When Kayla finds out and their world comes crashing down, will they be able to convince her she is exactly where she belongs?

A Siren Erotic Romance

Tasha’s Review:

Kayla is in love with her married best friends. Already having been burned by a man she didn’t realize was married when she was involved with him; Kayla is unwilling to go down that road again and has closed herself off. Unbeknownst to her, Jessica and David are in love with her too.

Taydelaan was an interesting read for me in the fact that it featured two females to one male. You don’t really see much of that when it comes to ménage relationships. So that added a unique spin on the overall experience. Ms. Clark does a nice job managing to express the emotions of all the involved parties in a way that the reader feels engrossed and invested in the story.

It was a quick read but it moved along at a believable pace and progression. My only complaint would be that I would have liked to see more of their triad relationship outside of the bedroom. They were never a threesome in public settings, other than David picking the two ladies up from work on one occasion.

This was a promising read for me and I look forward to reading more from Ms. Clark.

Author Review: Twice to the Stars by Alexis Reed

Twice to the Stars by Alexis Reed

Publisher: Ellora’s Cave

Genre: Sci-Fi, menage, futuristic, erotic

Length: Short Novel, 135 pages

Summary:

As the only woman on board the pioneer-class galactic vessel The Adamant, Chief Engineer Samantha Hartland knows better than to let any man into her bed—or her heart. Unfortunately, she doesn’t want just any. One. Man. Blake and Kane Damsen, identical twins and fellow officers, haunt her most vivid erotic dreams. Together.

Blake and Kane have kept their passion for the green-eyed mistress of engineering a secret for two years. Barely. But when one of the crew members reveals he’s willing to kill to get Samantha’s attention, she turns to the twins for help. She gets a lot more than that in the bargain.

Pomme’s Review:

So, Manchester United has just suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of Barcelona and their players are surely feeling as frustrated as I am, trying to review Twice to the Stars in a fitting manner.

I have to start by saying i really really really wanted to like this book. Everything in the summary pushes my kink buttons: strong woman in a position of power, check! Not one but two hot men, check! Twins, check!

Told in a third person limited point of view cycling between Samantha and both Blake and Kane, Twice to the Stars starts off very solid. Ms. Reed‘s prose is engaging and she sets the scene quickly but without information dumping, which I very much appreciated. Samantha comes across as both fragile and strong in the beginning scene, which is a nice dichotomy. I enjoyed her thoughts about Blake and Kane, because she isn’t ashamed of wanting them but knows she must keep herself in check. She isn’t tortured by her desires and doesn’t feel guilty for them, making her a really strong character. Blake and Kane, on the other hand, were a bit interchangeable throughout: while their want for Samantha comes across as very strong, I didn’t think they were too different from one another, which made them slightly weaker characters.

The plot, for me, is where Twice the Stars hit a snag: I was ready and eager for the premise set up in the summary to be developed, but instead it was just expounded upon in the first twenty pages, and by page twenty-six, the characters were getting it on. Now, I definitely don’t mind sex (on the contrary!) but I felt a bit cheated, since the whole premise was about how the three characters would make it work. It was just too easy, and there weren’t any real hurdles to Blake, Kane and Samantha being together. They were all ready for it by page two, and it was as if I had arrived after all the good stuff (feelings developing, desires being awakened, etc.) had already happened. Ms. Reed tried to insert some angst but it felt a little contrived, because the characters seemed to have already weighed the odds and decided on the outcome. This made everyone in the book fall flat, which is a shame.

The stalker story line was a little bit predictable, and it felt as if there wasn’t really a point to it: it doesn’t really come across as the trigger to the relationship, more that its events coincided with a good time for Blake and Kane’s feelings to make themselves known to Samantha. I also don’t really know what I was expecting, with Blake and Kane: they share Samantha but they don’t really interact with each other when they’re in bed, which I found a little disconcerting.

Now, I’ve complained about the sex. But, to be fair, it is really good sex: well-written, engaging, and ultimately very hot. For smut, Ms. Reed gets full points!

The layout itself is pleasing to the eye, and there were no typos that I could find.

In summary, this is definitely the read for you if you want well-written and satisfying sex of the twin variety, but I would definitely have liked Twice to the Stars to be longer, with more emphasis on how the characters actually get to the satisfying sex.

Summary:

Book one in the Daybreak 2525 Series

The son of a healer and a warrior, Doc is forced to take on both roles when his village is destroyed and his lover…gone

Returning from a visit to one of the outland farms, Doc finds his village destroyed, his family either gone or dead and his lover vanished without a trace. The few survivors hidden among the ruins tell a tale of ruthless, sadistic marauders taking what they want and burning the rest. Doc finds too many dead and his heart breaks for those he finds alive. Mothers whose children are gone, husbands who have lost everything and everyone.

Pulling as many people as he can together and tending their wounds, Doc vows to find the rest of his people. His father is among the dead, but his mother, his sister and lover are not.

The hunt is on.

Reader Advisory: This book is number one in a series and best read first. Contains scenes of hot m/m and m/f intimacy.

Tarsilla’s Review:

I have mixed feelings about this book. On one hand, I really enjoyed the story, and the intensity of the plot. Doc is a healer who encounters his village destroyed, and his family and friends either dead or taken as slaves. The emotional and physical struggles Doc goes through in his grief and his attempt to save his people are very vivid and give life to this story. Added to that, his worry over his lover Jazz is beautiful and heartbreaking, and I really enjoyed seeing Doc assume a mantle of protector and savior of the people he truly loves.

Doc has really strong characters besides Doc himself. Zoe, for instance, proved to be a formidable woman from beginning to end, and though it was no surprise that she had a thing for Doc, seeing them discover the depth of their feelings for each other was amazing. Jazz is a little less developed as a character, but since this is the first book in the series, I am assuming there was just no space to provide a more in depth view of his personality, especially with the amount of action the story offers. All the secondary characters are great assets to the overall story as well; they are real and powerful, regardless of how briefly they actually appeared on the pages. I really believe the soul of this book, and what propelled the story forward, were the characters and their reactions to events. They made this story credible and realistic despite the fantastical circumstances surrounding them.

That being said, I did have a couple of issues with this book. For one, given how strong characterization is, I was disappointed at the lack of complexity in the storyline. The plot itself – the destruction, the capture, the rescuing – was powerful and intense, without a doubt. But, there is just too much missing information to make me enjoy it one hundred percent. What happened to make this world the way it is? At first I thought this was a story set in the past, but little details seem to hint that maybe this is a post-apocalyptic scenario, which is perfectly fine, except why wasn’t that clearer? Not knowing exactly what was going on “backstage” disrupted my reading a great deal.

And another problem I had was with the eroticism in the book. It was hot and sexy, and very enjoyable, but just so inappropriate. Doc and Zoe would flirt or have sex at the oddest times, and even before Doc knew for sure if Jazz was alive or dead. Who does that? It would have been ok with me if that had been two people drawing comfort from each other, but the way it is written doesn’t really suggest that. And though I loved Doc’s character, there were times I just wanted to slap him, like when he kept putting his attraction for Jazz and Zoe above knowing for sure if his family was safe. It just broke my heart to see a character I came to admire and care about do such insensitive things. The general sexual tension throughout the story, in fact, just baffled me, because it would sprung up at the most awkward times. It was…a little offensive actually.

So, even though I really enjoyed Doc in the overall scheme of things, the few problems I had with the story were serious enough to disrupt my reading. As the beginning of a series, I think Ms. Mason is off to a good start. However, for the next installments, I would really like to see more details about this post-apocalyptic world these great characters live in, and a little more tact at handling the circumstances surrounding the sexual encounters between them. Still, I do look forward to the other books in this series.

Rated 3.5 Ravens by Tarsilla!
